Welll, NOT IN MY BACKYARD.? At least I think that was the motive behind the Kennedy's stalling the wind farm for ??3 years??, a wind farm that will supply less than 50% of the local electricity need and make no dent at all in Boston's?? Solar?? An excellent idea and can contribute in the long term, but negligible impact in the overall scale of energy America uses.? Clean fission from sea water - a wonderful solution, but it's been in R&D for the past 20 years or longer and they still can't maintain the reaction.

The reality I see is that we are between a rock and some really hard places. We use a lot of energy, we generate a lot of electircity with dirty fuels (whcih is probably doing more harm to the environment than the oil spill), and we don't have any REAL short term options.? We are consumers and not producers, we don't really make much that the rest of the world wants to buy, we would much prefer oil spills from new wells to be in the sands of Saudi Arabia rather than in the Gulf, but they seem to want us to send money in return for the oil.

I like the sound of the green rhetoric as much as the next guy, but I fear that much of it is just that - rhetoric.? Meanwhile, we have recovered from the gas price shock of a couple of years ago and we are back to buying trucks and SUV's with ever more horsepower and static gas mileage ratings, and blaming the car manufacturers for not making fuel efficient cars.  And we still haul most freight with trucks instead of trains.

I think it's all Jed Clampett's fault.

PS. And my son and family live in Navarre Florida, about 15 miles east of Pensacola.? And I do have real worries about the world and the US of A that my grandkids will wind up living in (but maybe grandparents have always felt that the world was "going to hell in a hand-basket", whatever that means)
