I don't care if someone uses active rotary or not. Go for it if that's your thing. I ski with plenty of guys that use a blend of movements. They are fine skiers.

I'm not here to say active rotary is bad. I'm just saying its not a requirement for the basic off-piste turn I use. Fact is that guys far more accomplished at skiing than most of us have said they don't use active rotary as the basis for their ripping skiing. I'm an OK skier and I don't use it as the basis for my turns and I'm quite capable of blending rotary into my turns if I wanted to. Its so easy to end up with too much rotary that I find myself needing to control what is naturally there rather than needing to add more.

Can you find extreme situations where you have no choice but to hop up and swing the skis around? Well, sure, just like you can find yourself using a wedge in a liftline. But those are not the movements I base my skiing on.

Max:  I think that is very well said.  Too often ski discussions like this become like pro baseball players talking about hitting in the Major Leagues, barely relevant to the averge skier.  In fact, at the upper levels hitters do things that horrify High School coaches when their average players seek to emulate the pros. But no one is going to try and stop Vladimir Guerrero from swinging at balls that have already bounced off of home plate, because he can do it. (and I'm not trying to equate rotary with that, just emphasizing the distance between what the exceptional athlete can do and an average, at best, skier like me.)

The picture that Bushwacka posted has no relevance to me.  I don't have the skills, the youth, or any desire to ski there.  But, the measure of ski enjoyment (at least for me) isn't where I ski or how fast I ski or how scary the terrain is; (we had this in a different thread).

And I believe that I still enjoy skiing every bit as much as anyone else here  (except for Gary, he's in a different cloud).  :D
