Last summer I was trying to improve my golf swing and went to national golf store that harnesses you up and analyzes your swing.

THEN, they have the audacity to put your swing video up frame by frame against or compared to that of a pro.

Ultimately, I found a happy medium and found if I stay within myself, use my athletic abilites, I could golf pretty darn well, not hurt myself and even....dare I say....enjoy the game.

Ok....I'm ready for the onslaught!  8)

G,

This summer I did some video with my Golf pro. Since my rant about fore/aft in skiing somewhat triggered your video thoughts, my golf video showed conclusively that my fore/aft golf swing motions brought me much too far onto my toes during the swing. I was using skiing mechanics in my golf swing......a major no-no. I fought, and continue to fight, that shift of weight to my toes. It does not go away and I can't simply "will it" away.  I have taken subsequent video where I concentrated on remaining better balanced, but, the resulting video shows I still go forward, although much less. That video is simple, objective data. All the talent I own cannot overcome the swing compensations caused by that forward movement. I am playing much better because a base problem was identified and corrected.

I too have had my swing compared to a pro (V.J. Singh was selected). In golf, just about all pro's will tell anyone that if they try to change a persons swing, the people will not return. So, they just try to make minor adjustments (ie tips) to improve ball flight. The store you were in was trying to sell a service. Run for your life.

The parallel argument I will make, is that using video to identify a single major error can be very effective, but, even if cured, it will not make a skier/golfer a pro. We, who accept PMTS, do so with a very long term goal of changing our thinking and technique about very basic movements. It's not a about traditional "tip" instruction used in golf. In the PMTS forum, many post video about their PMTS skiing and the feedback is that they are not really doing PMTS. No subjective b.s., no generalizations, no "it's all good".

I will never turn like Harald, or, swing like V.J. (at least in this lifetime). I just find it funny that so many obsess with some aspect of getting equipment "right", in both golf and skiing, then, just don't want to be bothered with technique. That does not apply to you, my technique brother! Hey,  I understand that most just want to go out and have fun during a day on the slopes - the day that skiing becomes work - will be my last on skis.

I'd advise anyone to go get some video, and, see what it tells you.
