Thanks Jim.  I had actually schemed to do something to slow my wife down.  Grooves may be a bit obvious...perhaps a sticky wax would be more subtle? Beeswax oughta do it - that stuff is pretty sticky. Failing that, a thin film of road tar would blend nicely with the black bases.
