2013-A Typical New England Winter
« on: February 21, 2013, 11:06:32 am »
You know, this year has been pretty much a regular old New England Winter.  We've had early cold snaps (which got every resort open for Turkey Day) and Warm snaps (which kept conditions sketchy until Dec 26).  We've had some timely storms, and a major snow event, and we've seen our usual share of rain and mixed precip.

Not sure what March will bring, but as we're looking at another, timely, snow storm creep in here for the weekend, I'm left thinking about what a pleasure just a regular ole' New England winter is.

Some years ago I came up with thought or two on Skiing in New England.  Truth is, we usually only get (Northern, VT luminary spots excluded here)  3 really great weeks a season, plus a couple of solid spring skiing weeks at the end.  Before you all jump, here me out:

1. These Three weeks are Rarely (if ever) consecutive, they just happen during the season, and the intrepid New england skier has to be ready to drop everything and get out when these weeks arrive.  They can be early december and then again in late march, or whenever, you just never know.

2.  In good seasons we get more weeks, once in a while, we get way more than three weeks (like 2011, 2003, 2001), but my point is, even in the lamest seasons (like 2012) we get those three weeks (21 days!).  Sure skiing is always great regardless of conditions, yada yada yada...but we all hold out for those weeks when everything is open, the surfaces are delightful, snow and climate combine for epic bliss.  It happens, every season, but sometimes you gotta slog through a lot of rough skiing while keeping that pragmatic stiff upper lip like a good yankee saying 'Hey any skiing is good skiing.'  But eventually, those weeks come.

3. I think we've hit our 3 weeks already (or at least 2.5 weeks) and this next storm should get us all to our seasonal quota, the rest will be gravy..and I got a good feeling about second helpings this season.

Holy ****...this is turning into an EPIC southern New England winter!!!   Another 6 inches of dense snow....another!?!

Love it--we've been skiing runs that I haven't touched in 5 years...and unlike 5 years ago I'm not staring at the rocks I'm usually dodging-instead, you can ski the woods with the same surface confidence you have on the groomers!

And this just ain't at Berkshire East (though, it's great here!)-But Mount Snow, Stratton, Bromley, Killington, you name it, it's rocking.

Loving it, come out and get some soon east coasters, this about as good s it gets around here (Spring skiing this weekend with sunshine ought to be wonderful--I'll be at the BEast both days if you want to meet up for a run or two!!!)

Liam,

I'm jealous, as I live on the south (read warm) side of all the storms you've been getting. How does Beast hold up in the 50 degrees we will get for the next few days? I may see you soon if my home mountain gets killed by the April like warmth.

Well,

It was wonderful yesterday (we picked up another very dense 7 inches on Friday morning).  It will be wonderful here in about another Hour as well (I am clocking some time in the Patrol room at the moment).  The coverage is, by all accounrts, the best in decades.  We've had bigger snow years, but not this density of durable off-piste coverage!).  Nothing has melted out (or come close to melting out) yet.  I suspect we can handle about a week of this weather before the off-piste really starts to deteriorate.

The on piste will ski with full coverage for weeks.

Tomorrow will be lovely here if you are a Monday skier (I'm heading to Maine for a few days).

We'll be open to April.
