Getting ready for Solvista camp
« on: January 30, 2009, 11:43:31 am »
Going to camp next Sat.  Anything I need to bring besides my skis etc.  I am considering skiing Sunday at Winter Park.  Gloria is getting boot fitted on Sat, so it would give her a day to try them out.

things to bring:? If your ski poles are strapless or if the straps just don't work well for setting up the hip-o-meter, then bring a strap, short bungee cord, or short length of rope suitable for making a hip-o-meter (two poles parallel across the hips, one in front and the other behind you, making firm contact with the hip bones.? place one tip to the left, one to the right, and fit tips through the strap of the other pole to hold in place if using built-in straps; otherwise tie together in same configuration.)

Also, you've never seen as many Head and Fischer skis in the ski racks as you'll see at camp.? Plenty of Rx- and supershape-series skis.? Use a labelmaker or find a unique sticker for your skis or else write your name on them with a grease pencil.

things to leave behind:? If possible, convince your skiing ego to stay behind on the east coast and bring only childlike curiosity and a lack of self-consciousness to camp.? Self-consciousness and a fear of failing (publicly!? :-[) is my biggest problem at camp, and I'm not alone in this.

I'm looking forward to meeting you and Gloria next week.

Todd:

Thanks for the ski strap advice, 'cause I do use Leki clip-on poles and don't usually bring the "normal" regular straps.

Perry:

Remember shorts for the alignment sessions.? You'll have socks and boots on, but they want to be able to see knees while standing in boots (and without boots).

I assume that everyone got the mail message about meeting upstairs early to get discount lift tickets.

Check the weather forecast.? Sol Vista is north off of I-70 across Berthoud Pass and can be tough driving (avalanches have washed cars off the road) in really extreme weather and it occasionally is better to take the Eisenhower tunnel all the way to Dillon, and then head north to US40 and then back east to Sol Vista.? Not at all likely, but listen before you leave the airport or maybe check with Chris/Diana/Harald if its snowing a lot.?

If you ski Winter Park, consider going back to Parsienne Bowl.? Mild terrain that often still has some powder for skiing.

Be ready to be amazed by the adaptive skiing program and skiers at Winter Park.

A new discovery that is making me glad I'm taking my 170cm RX8 - they fit in my son's snowboard bag.  Nice side pockets to put things in and Gloria's ski's fit too.  But the most important thing.............i t has wheels!  Don't always use them or need them, but, when you have the right smooth floor - it's smooth sailing through the airport.

And another 1st!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Waxed the tops of my skis.  Carnuba (sp?) paste wax, I hope that is ok Gary.

Look forward to meeting Jim, Lynn, Todd and any others coming.

Well, since you put both sets of skis in the one bag, I'm sure Gloria will appreciate having the wheels on the bag as she trundles it through the airport.

After all, you have a recent medical condition and should play that for all that its worth (of course, you have to tell her I said so in order for me to get my gratification).

Looking forward to meeting both of you as well.

Come to think about it, I think I can fit a pair of boots in there! >:D

Lynn, no ratting me out!!  That's the price you pay for refusing to be addicted to a skiing website!
