New Ski Purchase
« on: July 13, 2010, 08:00:26 am »
The snow wasn't your typical dry powder but there was at least shin high and it was sweet.....
The MX 78's were turning, smushin and carvn' with great aplomb....yes...Jac kson Hole Booty!

OK that's my story...

However my wife....same skis albeit shorter was getting a cardio workout that was breakn' down muscle fiber.

I said....whatdaya say...try some fat boards? With some resistance, she caved and they had a pair of badly beaten but well tuned (as if it mattered) Atomic Heaven N' Hells.....99mm underfoot.

Ok...can I say think of the tadpole to frog metamorphosis....sh e was sliding, gliding, smushing, turning and having a blast....yes....all past grievances and some future ones were forgiven and I again was her hero. She had so much fun, used way less energy and wanted more pow to ski.

And there in lies my motive...the happier she is and more terrain she is willing to tackle, not that she's a slacker at all, but her confidence and comfort level soared.

AND ...I found the same 2009 model on sale for 1/2 price and we should have those puppies in 2 weeks....just in time for Portillo.

Yes...I know....I rock!

Take care of Alice. I hope to share some future turns with her. No dropping her off any wind formed snow bridges!

Hey Lynn....will do of course....and taking care of her as she does me....for sure.

It would be fun to get some turns all together this year. I know Svend and Terryl want to put something together.

Summer is chugging along with warm weather, golf and biking...no complaints here...enjoying the ride!

Gary,
Good to see Alice is still be kept in the manner she has been accustomed to! Great lady! I remember skiing with both of you in JH one afternoon in new snow and mild fog and Alice was saying it was a real cardio workout. Her main issue is she skis behind you and you can wear out most. Slow down! :o They were tough conditions, I know cause  I was there.

But I'm just wondering, if Alice had those bucks hanging around in her wallet, what would she have bought?

Lynn....you crackned me up....almost fell off my chair...and YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!

but seriously.....this is about me OK....now to answer Mikes question...

Mike...it was a tug to get her to try a fat ski...she was very resistent...if it wasn't for the fact that she was burning so much energy that day at JH....wouldn't have happened.

But gotta say, when it's right it's right...those skis fit her to a tee...I think she hit the mother load cause she was cruisn' and smushing and glidng and sliding with such ease....WOW...can I say "happy camper!"

Since it's her first experience to the fat ski...and for her 99 underfoot is fat....she was not only happy with the performance in deeper heavy snow but when she got to hardpack, she knew she was not on her MX78's but she said...wow....these work here to...so it was a win win.

This season, I hope we get to lay down tracks with all here in some great snow and Alice....she'll be? all smiles I'm sure!

NOw Mike....get some fatties....105 to 115 undefoot.....it's your turn.. >:D? g

G,
On my last day in Jackson, we had 18" of new and I demo'd a pair of Solly Shogun's, 105 as I remember. My expectations did live up to the reality of the experience as they were not better than my 88 Kastle's in pow and were sloppy in areas where the pow was packed out. The light conditions were foggy tough and I was fatigued at the end of the ski week, so, it may not have been a fair demo. Ron thinks Shogun's are a funky pow ski and I'm sure there there is something I'd like better.

For sure, I need more time in pow! ;D  Don't we all!

For sure Mike on needing, dreaming and wanting more pow to ski..

but hey....the Shogun might night be the right connection for you....

Still, it's worth giving the big floaters another shot....

You may find for the conditions you roll in the 88 underfoot gives you plenty.  The days when it's wet, deep, fluffy, and piled....I think the big boards just smooth out the ride.

Can hardly wait.....

Mike the shogun is not a ski for you!  It's too stiff.  You need something softer, easier to manuever.  its not a great powder ski IMHO. at 105 and with only eareely rise, its really an all mountain soft snow ski.  I would still love to see you try out a obsethed.

I did the Shogun at the recommendation of Stephen (Skiing in Jackson) and his contacts at the rental shop and it was touted as a hot ski by Jackson Locals. So much for listening to amateurs when I can get advice from Phil and Ron. I remember Ron sort of cringing when I first told him I was on that ski.

Hey, I'll ski a wide ski but next time I'd prefer to get some time on it prior to a real pow day.

Remember what a hard core JH skier is like? OK, that's the kind of ski a JH local, hard charger would like, I know it would not be the ski for me.  I don't get the whole uber stiff powder/soft snow ski thing. I guess if I skied open bowls and big lines it has its advantage but I dont....
