Real Skiers IV anyone?
« on: August 23, 2010, 01:26:58 pm »
Hi Gang...it's been a while. Hope all is well and a belated birthday to you Mike.

Traveling to England and bike riding in Ireland...man....li fe has been REALLY good! PLUS 2 new grandbabies.....swe et.

SO......are there any takers for a RS 4.....I know some of us have talked about going back to Steamboat that 2nd week in December. They seem to have the best conditions of which I've never been disappointed.

It's always tons of fun skiing with you all.

So let's start the list....who is in?

Best to all for a great ski season.....G

Sounds like you have had a really wonderful summer!
Would love to hear about your trip to Ireland. Group experience or
done privately?

I am not planning any trips until I know my job status.

But to all you Realskiers out there; Ron runs a great "Man Cave"! >:D

 ;D ;D ;D

Gary,

HB right back atcha, fellow Leo!

What are the actual dates? It's a dream at this point and December has been consumed with family things, but, maybe, just maybe.

Are you doing Jackson in January?

Hey Lynn....keeping fingers crossed for you...I gotta believe with your experience and you ability to make noise...I gotta believe those two things alone make you shoe in for job opps....I'd be happy to be a job reference for ya!

Our trip started in London where we visited an old friend....touring some great sites including the Tower of London...yes we saw the Queens Jewels..too many of them...famous beheading places...some great castles including Windsor. Went to Stonehenge and a real treat in Bath, England, the Roman Baths..very cool. Lots of quaint villages and great food and no one blows their car horns...WOW!

On to Ireland where we biked 180 miles in 6 days...in 20 to 40 mph winds...fun for sure and great training. Loved the Irish, the sea food, the forts, castles, and incredible history...the country side is beautiful, lush green,....a real Brigadoon! ALL this and over 600 pics...just terrific. AND they don't blow their horns here either.
Mike...yup..Jackson 3rd week in Jan.....that's our week to be there. Let me know if any plan on being out there that week. As far as December...hoping to keep that tradition alive in Steamboat.
Best, Gary

We have talked many times of a weekend get together in Vermont.
Any interest here in picking a weekend and making it happen?

Also, I do think a meet up at Elk is in order.
LP, Ron, Jim and myself are all contenders for at least a day.
Anyone else go there on occasion?

Weekend skiing in Vermont.....hmmm... .Stratton way to busy...Killington.. ...bad experience with people there for me..

BUT..Okemo....that could be a fun get away...great mountain, they make great snow if necessary...easy to get to.

I (we) skied a couple of days at Okemo, one at Killington and then another at Stratton two years ago.? I agree with your Stratton assessement, was pretty under-impressed by Okemo (I was expecting to really like it there, lots of good press), and we had a surprisingly good time at Killington in spite of Lynn's predilection to not like it there based on past experiences and word of mouth (met up and skied with Todd there).? I actually think I like SugarBush (a bit north of Killington) better than any of them.? And I also really liked Stowe, but now we're getting really far north.

Gary, have you never experienced the joy of skiing at a really BIG mountain.? Elk is near Scranton, PA about an hour south of Binghampton, and is the pride of Lynn's part of upstate New York even though it is Pennsylvania.? ;D

If the majority vote goes for Okemo, then I will abide.
I find it a boring mountain, but any day skiing, is a good day.

Jim and met up with Todd at Killington 2 years ago. It was my first time there. Having a guide made all the difference.
We had a great day there. Also got to see Eliot Spitzer at the lodge (head hung in shame).

I have a personal liking for Sugarbush. Love the terrain and the fact that you can also ski a completely different mountain next door; Mt Ellen. But it is a hike and not the easiest drive. The last hour of driving past Killington on Rte 100 is windy and pretty. Nice daytime drive.

Hope more folks will weigh in with a preferred choice!
And lets pick a weekend well in advance so we are able to make this happen! ;D

I remember that Okemo did look like it could have some good tree skiing, but the coverage was really lacking, so we didn't go there much.

Killington has a small glade where they made snow, and so had good tree skiing. We had a blast in there (and Lynn had a good time in the terrain park).  It was very windy and nasty cold that day, if I remember correctly.

I have no strong preference regarding the mountains in southern Vt. and the main reason is this is much more of a social gathering with skis on. All the southern mountains have pluses and minuses. Throw Pico in the mix- decent vertical with a high speed, not a great deal of terrain but for a weekend, I'd be game. I remember Okemo as flat, flat, flat. Stratton will always have a special place in my heart as it's my first bigger mountain experience and we had a house there one winter. Not been back in many many years. Would be nice to do a townhouse for a weekend. Pay your money and take your chances with weather and snow conditions.   Picking a date that's  convenient is a much harder issue.

G, are you and Alice up for the ride?

Lynn, as the Elk semi-resident skier, just pick some weekends you intend to be there.

I just remember Okemo as a big fun cruiser mountain and when they had pow...it was a blast...and they do take care of the trails....just a fun place. Will wait to see on what days get posted and wil let you know if we can make it.

I'm planning a trip to Steamboat Feb 6-12....

I know Greg had some interest in skiing Steamboat again this year.

Would love to ski with any and all here....shoud be good snow too.

Best, g

Out of summer hybernation and whoa.......lots to catch up on.

Gary,
We actually have dates for Steamboat the following week.  We are going to see if they can find one for the week you have.  If that works out, we will have extra space.  Lots of ifs and maybes but I would love to see a plan come together.  If Jim comes, maybe he will let me ride his new big west ski!!!!!!!!

Way to pull the trigger Jim.

Hi to all.
