New Head Supershape
« on: January 23, 2007, 09:02:26 am »
OK, I usually don't break new skis early but with all the Head fans on this forum I just had to. For 07/08 season, Head Supershape Magnum. As far as I know the same construction but with a sidecut of 121/71/107. This is where frontside carvers or true all mountain shapes are headed. Fischer is also bringing out a line of sidewall skis to add to the RX's unfortunatly I don't have all the shapes or names, but I will keep updating if you wpuld all like. I will ski most of the new product next week and may give some better overviews by the 4th.

Obviously I and many others here would like to hear your comments after you ski any and all the new head skis. I have heard mention of the SS Magnum, but I have not heard anyone speak about it who has skied it.

The other Head skis that have been talked about are the IM 78 (replacing the IM 77 and supposedly a sandwich construction ski), and the IM 95 (i beleive I heard it was cap constructtion and quite light in weight).

If you actually get the full head line-up for the '07-'08 year all of us would love to see it.

Thanks in advance. JB.

Great info, Rick. Keep it coming!

The Fischer RX line needs an update as the rapid pace of development seems to quicken. The Supershape Magnum, with a 71mm waist will be ideal for high altitude carvers who need a wider ski than the standard SS for natural snow.

A new generation of race-carvers with a 70 to 72mm waist seems to be emerging. These will bring added versatility to skis primarily used for carving hardpack, but also see some boot-top deep snow.

Cheers,

Michael

nice, but I'll keep my 121-66-108's. Rick, Any news of if they are changing the current perfect Supershape?

PS- I just bought Buck's 07' Supershapes this AM.  One pair for here, the other for Steamboat!

I knew that I would get more questions than I can answer with the info at hand. I'm not in Vegas for the show so I'm getting only pieces back from our people there. Th supershape magnum was online at www.skipressworld.c om/snowpress as part of an article on frontside all mountain skis. the Fischer info came to me three weeks ago but had not talked to anybody who has skied them yet. The construction is sandwhich sidewall with waists ranging from 70 to 90+ ( sound like some of the monsters?).
The industry is headed to the wider waisted carvers with big tips and differing tails as the new all mountain ski. This years Dynastar Contact 11 ( I bought a pair also Michael ) Nordica Mach 3 Rossignol Z9 of course the Metrons are good examples of current models in this new category.

I will be on these next wed-fri and if the condo has wi-fi I will put up some thoughts each night. I don't write reviews quite as good as some but will give it a shot.

So RickB, was this thread just a tease or did you try the SS magnum and were so impressed that you are currently cornering the market? ;D

Would love to see the review.

Sorry for the delay at getting back to this thread. There are a few amenities still missing in the Snowbasin area, like wi-fi and breakfast, and since I got back been real busy picking skis and boots for next years buy.

A couple of facts about me. 53 years old, 35 of this spent in the ski industry at a lot of levels. 230 lbs, former full certified instructor and freestyle competitor. Work on hill with boot fits for PSIA and PMTS instructors and ed staff.

The new Supershape Magnum is a great all mountain extension of the original. You really do not have to tip the skis over anymore to get the same results as before, maybe if you are trying to show and exaggerated move to a student it would take more speed to show this. None of the power is lost on the hill. These two new Magnums will give you everything and with the chip version a little more peace of mind as you pop out of a turn at high speed. Probably not as good as a master race  ski. If you didn't know they where different it is very hard to distinguish the two shapes. Sat down at lunch with Peter and he had a lot of the same opinions, watch for his review to come. The Xenon line from Head is a very interesting alternative to all mountain front side riping. We skied the 9.0 and 7.0. The shapes at 124/73/108 are a powerful alternative to the SS for everyday lay back skiing. These ski skis pull you into a turn with ease but allow you to control the shape of the turns. Much more skier control than a Metron and a lot more life than a Rossi Zenith. The only weak point is a little two much tip looseness at high speeds. These are very good skis to ski with confidence and still learn the to use the shape to make a turn.

I'm a better communicator in person than writing. Hopefully this does not confuse too many people. Look for other good reviews to come on this website and the ones that have already come up on Epic. The review Bob Peters did on the Head's is right on. ( I'm the midwesterner he talks about). Also look for Sierrajims upcoming reviews as he has a good handle on skis.

Buy the way, the best ski I skied for fronntside all mountain ripping like I like. The Dynastar Limited (Contact 11) and for backside all mountain the Fischer Watea 84. Again my opinion just for me.

I couldn't find anywhere to demo new stuff. I am heading back out in Mid-March, I hope to find some then. Any news on the 82?
