Living Proof:

In addition to the compact crank (my bike came that way) I got a lot of "assistance" when I changed the rear cassette from the 11/23 that came with the bike to a 12/27.  Also, depending on the rear derallier, you may even be able to go up to a 28 tooth granny gear.
