Just for Jbotti
« on: October 06, 2009, 08:06:45 am »
John, just for you, I picked up a pair of Dynastar 4x4's this week for making turns at home and possibly on the road if there's nothing new or soft loose.

If you make it to Montana you will love those skis on the groomed terrain!! I have yet to ski them. My good friend Thor Kallerud (he was head mens technical coach of the US Ski Team) stays in touch with Tommy Moe. When he spoke with Tommy last year Tommy said these were the best non race skis ever made. He absolutely loves them. My guess is that he skies them in the 178 length, which means that 172 should be perfect for us tall mortals. The ski shop in Monntana has carried no Dyanstar skis so far. Maybe they will add some this year.

I actually have a list of skis I am sending the guy that runs the shop. I iwll lean on him to get all these so that I can demo them. Maybe I will get lucky and he will have 60-70%. 2 years ago the selection was great.

everyone I know who has them has loved them.  like the feel of Dynastar and evogear is blowing them out at $407 shipped.

i was advised to buy down in size due to the nature of the ski.

From what I hear it is more versatile than the Porgressor 9, and it doesn't give up much carving on hard snow. I absolutely love my Prrgressors and they are my favorite, go to, hard snow ski. I really don't have a slot in my quiver for these especially since I own IM 78's as well. If I owned neither, these would be my first choice based upon what people say. One day I am sure I will demo them. Enjoy!!

Damnit, Jbotti, just for you I bought a set of compact cranks for my road bike just so I can climb mountains. ::) Go figure?

Jon

I don't think you realize the impact you have had on this forum!!!

LivingProof buying a compact cranks, Ron buying Dynastars 4x4's.  ;) ;D

AND, to be honest, I remembered your comment about not attacking hills in biking, but learning to be with them. ( a paraphrase of sorts)

So, remembering that comment, I focused on pacing myself up hills and comfortable completion. ( I have always felt I "hated hills").

Now, I am beginning to rather like up hill climbs on a bike. On my terms. Slow and steady as she goes. Respect for the hill I am on.

So, thank you!!!

Just for the record.

What I really want to say is " Damnit Jbotti, you made me buy a plane ticket to Montana just to ski bluebird days in great pow that was in HH's video!".

Anyone second that motion?

Living Proof:

In addition to the compact crank (my bike came that way) I got a lot of "assistance" when I changed the rear cassette from the 11/23 that came with the bike to a 12/27.  Also, depending on the rear derallier, you may even be able to go up to a 28 tooth granny gear.

Thanks Jim,
I had my bike (Trek 2.3) built following Trek's warranty replacement of my old frame, and, my gruppo came via a purchase from a friend of his lightly used Shimano 9 speed system. Standard 51/39 cranks need a much younger stud-muffin to power 'em. A memory recall is the rear is a 26 tooth. Compact geometry (or triple) is the way to go for riders like you and me who want to train or ride for enjoyment. Riding in some very serious headwinds has beat up my knees, and, my climbing training has been limited to bridges.
I have an older Trek touring bike that remains in reserve for serious rides in hills.

Back to snow in Montana!

Mike

Lynn has the 51/39 crank and 9 speed (all Dura Ace) on her Titanium bike.? Always humbles me to see her (and her Zipp 404 aero wheels) riding ahead of me, looking at where the chain is on the rear cassette, and realizing that she's passing me AND pushing bigger gears than me.

By the way, don't tell her this.? Her eyes glaze over when I over think stuff like net gear ratios and such, so I haven't told her.

I'm guilty of being a little "phobic" abut NYC, but,

Anyone cycling there with a Ti frame and Dura Ace grouppo better be fast.

Hmm, I wonder if the steal skis at lunch in Montana? I hear that's a hanging offense in the real west.
