Living Proof:

In addition to the compact crank (my bike came that way) I got a lot of "assistance" when I changed the rear cassette from the 11/23 that came with the bike to a 12/27.? Also, depending on the rear derallier, you may even be able to go up to a 28 tooth granny gear.

Thanks Jim,
I had my bike (Trek 2.3) built following Trek's warranty replacement of my old frame, and, my gruppo came via a purchase from a friend of his lightly used Shimano 9 speed system. Standard 51/39 cranks need a much younger stud-muffin to power 'em. A memory recall is the rear is a 26 tooth. Compact geometry (or triple) is the way to go for riders like you and me who want to train or ride for enjoyment. Riding in some very serious headwinds has beat up my knees, and, my climbing training has been limited to bridges.
I have an older Trek touring bike that remains in reserve for serious rides in hills.

Back to snow in Montana!
