That "tail wash out method" has served me well when demoing skis...Once out of the shop and after I've made 3 or 4 turns, I have the ability with most demo bindings to make a "quick here hold my gloves while I adjust the bindings" move. But usually when I demo, I ask the tech to mount the bindings 1 centimeter foward out of the starting gate.

Yep...you're correct on the balance thingy....it's just one of the weird things I do when setting up my skis.
