Here's what's up with the site
« on: October 22, 2007, 01:58:40 pm »
Hey Gang, I just finished speaking with Peter..

1st..Ron..your artwork...he hasn't forgotten ....next couple of days or call him end of week to remind him.

Now, in the bottom right hand corner of the MAIN page once logged in, click on the small blue word "here" and then you will be able to log in.

At this time, no "Newbees" will be able to post. This is a temporary safeguard and one that Peter truly regrets they have to put in place.

HOWEVER...Peter is creating a Goggle Blog Site that is being set up now and tested and it's called Realskiers.blogspot .com

This ultimately may be the site where we will all be able to communicate without all the spammers and WITH the Newbees.

Peter thanks all for their patience. He also wanted to know if anyone wished to be the "Moderator"

Peter has worked many hours and at his expense explored numerous ways of modifying the site to protect it. After exhausting many possibilities, he feels this is the best way to reslove the problems and give us our line of communication.

Passing along a huge thanks from Peter!

OK, I can reply to Gary's post.? I will delete this at some point, must testing.

But I can't edit my posts.  That will be embarrassing, because I go back and correct spelling things all the time.
Maybe will work differently if invoked from the RealSkiers site.

NOt sure Jim...just take a minute and use the spellcheck button.

AND...ALWAYS....re-think before post...."foot in mouth or good to go"?! ;D

Hopefully, we'll be to full operations by first part of the week either here or at the Goggle Blog site.

I surrender.  I am unable to get registered with the blog.  Frustrating.

Well, so far I prefer this. Can't register until I do something to my computer..java script etc etc. Deal with it thursday.
Also, the visuals are not great on the blog site. Overly pale page with no differentiation between  messages. Just my opinion. Hopefully, that will be improved.
I don't understand why PMTS and Epic can keep out spammers, but not this site.

I agree with Lynn's assessment of this site vs. the Blog site.

Gary:

Yes, emailed Peter via the realskiers site, didn't hear anything back last night.  I don't have a direct email address for Peter and can't check home email from here.

My opinion.  The only thing wrong with this forum is the spam, and the only thing that allows the spam to happen is that the spammers can auto-enroll and create a user account for themselves.  If he disable's the ability for users to create their own accounts, then the spam is mostly gone.  Then that function (creation of new accounts) needs to be assumed by someone (the moderators or an administrator).  I don't believe that is a particularly daunting job, there aren't that many people that actively use the forum, and I would assume that the BB software has capabilities to support this.

Jim....I'll send you Peters cell phone number. You need to have a direct conversation with him.

Nevils:

It's hard to say whether Epic is without Spam or not (because I believe that it is probably impossible to not have undesirable material posted).  I do know that Epic has gone from a limited number (maybe less than 3) of moderators to more than 10 currently, and one of the tasks of the moderators is to remove the objectionable stuff that does get through.

Any forum site that allows the posting of URL links and graphics (which Epic and most do) has to be vulnerable to someone posting undesirable URL's and graphics.  My understanding it that Peter is now attempting to address this lack of moderator intervention, we have encouraged him to use Gary and Ron and Midwif (or some subset) as moderators.

NEWBIE DISCRIMINATION!!!!

Well it IS hard coming up with the required 4 posts when you know so little about the current state of skiing....I broke my leg in a pair of old cable bindings once...my dad completely tore his achilles tendon skiing in France.  Is there a site for "best injuries?"  or may be "best falls"?   ;D

Newbies are not prevented from posting.  They are only prevented from CREATING new topics in this Open Discussion forum.

Newbies can POST in this forum, and they can POST and CREATE new topics in any of the other forums.

The spam robots automatically create new topics and post a single disgusting entry, and always did it to the first forum listed (probably something in their programming), so we created access rules targeted at blocking those automated robots.
