Airline ski baggage rules
« on: September 21, 2008, 08:21:46 pm »
As summarized in the recent issue of SKI magazine.

Ski bag and boot bag count as single checked bag?
? ?YES - American, Continental, Delta, Frontier, Jet Blue, Northwest, Southwest, United.
? ?NO - Air Canada (ski bag is allowed, boot bag counts as an extra bag)

First checked bag free?
? ?YES - Air Canada, Continental, Delta, Frontier, Jet Blue, Southwest,
? ?NO - American ($15), Continental ($15), Northwest ($15), United ($15)

Second checked bag cost.
Free - Southwest
$20 - Jet Blue
$25 -? Air Canada, American, Continental, Frontier, Northwest, United.
$50 - Delta

Excess bag charge.
$25 - Southwest.
$50 - Frontier
$75 - Jet Blue
$100 - Air Canada, American, Continental, Northwest,
$125 - Delta, United

Max. weight for bag without penalty was 50 lbs for all airlines. Penalties were around $100, low of $50 and high of $175.

It's good to see that having a boot bag and a ski bag still count as a single bag, but I tend to carry on my boot bag anyway.? You will probably have to pay for them though, since you will likely also have a checked bag with ski clothes.? I would be very careful to weigh bags and not stuff the ski bag full of clothes, you'll wind up paying more for having an overweight bag than for having that stuff in a separate bag. I have no idea whether the rules are based on when you made your reservation or whether they are based on whatever is in effect when you fly.

Thanks Ron, I edited the above into the summary.
And the thanks are to SKI magazine, I just plagiarized their content.
