Loveland reviews please
« on: December 23, 2008, 04:25:34 pm »
My son wants me to take him on an inexpensive trip to a big mountain.  I can get flights to Denver fairly cheap and there are some inexpensive packages at Loveland.  He is a nuckle dragger but boards very well.  I was wondering how Loveland is to ski/ride.  Alternative destination ideas welcome.

Perry:? I know Lynn has skied Loveland a couple of times, maybe she will chip in (she's working a lot this week).? I really like Keystone.? The front side is pretty easy, getting a bit more difficult as you move farther back, but overall a pretty easy "big hill", They have a huge area on the right side of the front face of the mountain that is primarily snowboard "features".? Even if he isn't into the park stuff, I imagine that he would enjoy watching some of the others.

I went to Breckenridge with my son and daughter-in-law when they were converting to snow boarding and that was a bad decision for them.? Too many flat sections and traverses.? Overall not much of a fan of Breckenridge anyway.

I do know that Loveland is pretty high, don't know if either of you have problems adjusting to altitude.

A trip to Colorado ended with my friend friend Irina and I skiing the last two days at Loveland. They got a big snow fall which we decided to take advantage of. We met a former Loveland Patroller, who took us all over the place. We had a blast. I think we would not have had that great a sense of Loveland if we had not gone exploring with her.
Loveland was a great experience, inexpensive and Chair 9 should be done at least once. I froze my a** off above the tree line area it serves. At the top is the continental divide. Irina (Russian as her name) wanted to go again, but yours truly declined the frost bite ride again.

I agree with Jim about Keystone. A very nice area with lots of blue terrain, easy trees to do. It has harder terrain, which I have not made it to yet.

Thanks for the input.  I will definitely look at Keystone.  My son will be 17 and is a very good boarder.  Neither one of us do a lot of steep bumps but everything else is on the menu.

Just booked my plans.  Will stay in Dillon 3/26 -3/29  Go on Thursday and arrive in Denver at 10AM.  Will probably go to Keystone and ski some. If we want to extend, we can do the night skiing.  That would be my plan unless someone has a better suggestion.  Friday, I will probably go to Vail.  I just love it there, especially in the back.  And Sat. I will prob go to Loveland.

Any knowledge about places to eat would be welcome.  We will likely ski, eat, and sleep and not much else.

While you're checking flights to Denver, check Eagle, (EGE) near vail.  Occasionally the flights are significantly cheaper.

I have three trips planned  out there this year.  This makes 'finding flights' my part time job. :)

Sorry, I missed this when I replied about the flights.

The Arapahoe Cafe is a simple, inexpensive place to eat.  Well worth the try.
Also, Ryan Pugs.... for some great microbrews and Prime rib....

Your plan to hit Loveland on Saturday is good because it's less crowded than the destination resorts.  I second the Arapahoe Cafe suggestion.  Good, affordable chow.

I don't know if its too late but most flights going into Hayden, for Steamboat are about 200-300 r/t. Also, if he's 12, he would fly for free. Bes tof luck to you either way.  take a day and ski Copper!

great info!  Thanks esp for the micro brew!  Nothing like a good brew after a day on the slopes.

Luke is 17, so no free rides :-\

Tell me what you like about Copper?
