Back to tuning for a moment (sorry to divert you guys from lustful dreams of stables and ponies...I'm not going there either).
Here's my tuning regimen for your scrutiny and constructive input:
1) File base and side bevels to 1 & 2 degrees, respectively -- this is a one-time thing to get rid of the factory tune (which, in our case was 0.5 & 3, I think)
2) Maintain the edges with a ceramic wet stone, as needed, medium grit followed by fine grit, (just a light touch up to renew the edge - no major filing or metal removal)
3) Detune tips and tails with gummi (just a few inches)
4) Base repair with candle, as needed; scrape with steel scraper, sand flat (lightly)
5) Brush with brass to clean bases and remove old wax (no base cleaner spray used, except for repair spots); wipe clean
6) Hot wax; let cool 15 min.; scrape (2 to 3 passes)
7) Brush with nylon; wipe clean
8 ) Have a barley sandwich, congratulate self on another job well done....
Tools used:? Holmenkol vise; KUU Ice Buster side bevel tool, 88 deg.; Toko base bevel tool, 1 deg.; KUU Iron Maiden waxing iron; metal files; ceramic wet stones; abrasive gummi; and the usual brushes and scrapers.? Just bought a cork pad for traveling too.
My only questions at the moment are about burr removal and base repair:
-- What works best for burr removal? The gummi? Ceramic wet stone? Metal file? Or should I buy a diamond stone?
-- Are the base repair sticks (flat sticks, soldering iron) better than the candles? I've had mixed success with the candles -- deeper gouges are OK, but shallow scrapes don't seem to last, or just get pulled back off with the steel scraper.? I've never used the sticks -- does anyone have experience with these?
Anyway, feel free to comment and add suggestions.
