Utah trip
« on: February 16, 2009, 09:45:49 am »
Terryl and I managed to get a break from the obligations of work and family, and spent four days skiing in Utah last week.? Skied Deer Valley on the first day, after a 12" snow fall -- no further comment...DV is just not our kind of place.? Nice grooming, great service and all that, but we just didn't care for the atmosphere of the place.

Skied the next three days at Snowbasin, and loved it! This may now be my favorite ski area, or at least tied with Lake Louise.? It's in the middle of a National Forest Reserve about an hour away from Park City and SLC.? This means no condos, no chalets, no hotels, no fast food joints -- just the lodges and the lifts --- perfect! As you may have gathered, we like out-of-the-way places with a non-commercial, unpretentious atmosphere, where the only reason to go is great skiing.

And the skiing is great.? This is a big area -? ~3000 acres, 2500 ft. vertical.? There's something for everyone -- great groomers of all skill levels, trees galore, wide open bowls, steeps, and acres and acres of untracked sweet Utah powder! Backside, out of boundary skiing is also possible, and opens up a huge area of untracked terrain.

The first two days there it just wouldn't stop snowing.? We gave up on trying to get through on our Supershapes, and rented wider skis (that's a subject for another thread).? The third day was brilliant sunshine and just the sweetest skiing you could ask for.? We learned a ton about how to ski soft snow, bumps, crud, and powder.? All that fresh snow was a first for us easterners, and was challenging, frustrating at times, but a lot of fun.? The wider skis definitely made it easier, and I see a 2-ski quiver for us in the crystal ball.? ;D

The place is uncrowded, and there were mostly locals there.? As it's at least 30 minutes to an hour from any accommodation, it sure keeps the crowds down.? They say that you can find virtually untouched bowls and tree skiing a week after a dump.

I did say it was unpretentious, but Snowbasin really does pamper with over-the-top opulent lodges, delicious food, three gondolas, and great service.? Heated plaza and sidewalks at the entrance, wall-to-wall oriental carpets in all the lodges, gilt chandeliers, and whole quarries must have been emptied to make all the granite and marble for the bathrooms.? I think each bathroom in that place cost more than my house!? And hey Ron! There are espresso machines in each of the four lodges! La Spaziale, too - nice!? The barista at the summit lodge was so happy to make some espressos, because he hardly gets any call for them up there.? When I came back the second and third days to order some more, he was over the moon, and wanted to know if he'd done a good job.

For all the opulent furnishings etc., the staff and overall atmosphere is really friendly and down to earth.? No posers or snoots in sight.? People were there to ski and relax, not to be "seen".? My kinda place.? ?8)

Highly recommended!!!

Here are some pics....(for all you addicts of steep terrian, check out the skier at the top of the chute in the last picture -- looked like a near-vertical drop...yikes!)

Svend:

Excellent post and good pictures.
Aren't the huge beams in the lodges just awesome?? And yes to the over the top elegance of the bathrooms, but you are also right about the down to earth friendliness of the people.?

Especially amazing when I remember my first trip there in 1999? when they were still getting ready for the Olympics and? building/renovating the lodges.? The bathrooms were little more than outhouses in mobile trailers (and not very well heated).

My favorite location is over to the left with the Strawberry gondola and the view out over the Salt Lake from the catwalk at the top of the gondola.

I agree -- the view is spectacular.? But that area is only good if the weather is fair.? If it's snowing and blowing, it's pretty much a white-out up there.? That mountain is the first thing the weather hits after it crosses the lake and the plains, and it gets nasty at the top of the Strawberry gondola.? We got caught up there, and could barely see 15 feet ahead.? If it hadn't been for the fluorescent markers every 5 yards, we'd never have found the trail back to the base lodge.? BTW, if you mistakenly end up at the base of the Strawberry gondola, like we did, there's no way back to the base lodge except to go up to the top -- not fun in a howling storm.

That actually is my only gripe about the place -- when it was storming, there was only one lift open that could take you part way up the mountain to avoid the weather at the top.? All others went to the top where it was white-out conditions.? So if you didn't want to go up and fight the weather, you were stuck doing the same lift and same runs over and over again.

You are right.? We were the last ride up once just as they were closing the Gondola.? Really scary getting across the catwalk with ZERO visibility, and it was even harder for the snowboarders.? They would slide out into the open and just instantly get blown over.? On that day, at least, I think they should have closed the Gondola an hour earlier.? It was a sobering ski back to the base area as we realized how protected from the reality of the weather we normally are. I remember how concerned we were, knowing that if you accidentally wind up at the bottom of the gondola you have a problem (although I'm sure they have some sort of emergency access).?

Another thing I wanted to mention about Snowbasin, is that it wasn't overly expensive -- either for the lift tickets or the food.  A filling, hearty lunch for the two of us never cost more than $16, plus a couple of bucks for an espresso chaser  ;D.  Lift tickets were $63 at the wicket, but you could get them for $52 in SLC at a couple of ski shops there.  Very reasonable, and we didn't ever feel gouged.  Nice....

Snowbasin is one of my favorites and I only did one day at sub-optimal conditions.  Stunning visuals.

Glad you got dumped on!!

Yeah, well at least at Snowbasin we got dumped on with snow, which has some dignity and delicacy to it.  Around here, I get dumped on with barbs about tasting urine, or worse.  No respect.  Harummph!

I fail to see the humor especially in regards to the urine treatment of your skis Svend. At HV while you slept in each morning till 7am your skis were round up and warmed up. Have you noticed your ski skills magically improving....well let me tell ya....

A little squirt here and there go a long way.  >:D

Well, that does explain everything, doesn't it? And here I thought it was me that was getting better, and all along it was magical anointing of my skis in the dark wee hours of the morning.  Some pagan ritual, doubtless.  Homage to the Norse ski gods.  ???

A yes...yep....that's it.....ritual....su re...I'll buy that!  ::)

Glad you an Terryl had a chance to experience such a nice variety of conditions. I think that's what drives us to be better skiers....pushing ourselves, finding our strengths and weaknesses.

Now, you've got the hunger.....the thirst...just like a Powder Vampire  :o....you need more to satisfy that hunger.

I know....I'm one too!

Gotta slip those in every now and then to see if anyone's had their morning espresso eye-opener.
