improve your skiing (or any sport) Instantly!
« on: September 14, 2009, 04:14:41 am »
if there's one thing you can do now for all your training and sports is to simply learn to breath correctly. This is something I have been working on all summer (my trainer is also a yoga instructor) and changing my breathing patterns have had a huge impact. Dan Egan's clinic also teaches proper breathing during skiing. I use it for running, biking and workout sessions as well.  Don't breath all the way out but always reserve a small amount of air in your lungs, breath in through the nose, out through the mouth.  Breath in as you compress or draw your legs/arms into your body, exhale as you push away (for the majority of times) Just my .02!

RON!!!
You mad- man!!!
Found yoga breathing, did you??

Yes, the stillness one can find within when effort and breath are in harmony is a wonderful thing.
I do yoga and feel it there.

But my first experience was.......swimming!
In competitive swimming, you must breathe in thru your mouth and out thru nostrils and mouth. The synchronization
between this and the stroke cycle is what helps determine an efficient, smooth stroke.

And so applicable to so many other activies. Though rarely do other sports focus on "the breath".

I really do think that yoga is a perfect "counter balanced" compliment to skiing. The focus on breath, balance and symmetry in the body,
make the two like....filet mignon and a souful cabernet, green eggs and ham, manchego and a full bodied rioja.....you get my drift! ;) :D :D

well-said and now I am very hungry........  Can I substitute a bone-in buffalo Ribeye for the fillet? OTW- I love the pairings, :)

Lynn and Ron,
While out road biking this weekend, I thought of this thread. I've a mild deviated septum and sinus conditions so I may not be the best candidate for breathing through the nose.
But I'm here to tell ya, that my demands for breath volume during extended periods near the upper limits of heart rate require me to breath via my mouth. Cycling coaches teach the "belly breathing" technique where the sternum is expanded to inhale. It seemed to me that the body/head/neck position when road biking seems to contract the nasal passages.
Lynn, do you use nose breathing on extended rides?

try to keep the neck in a neutral position when postive, it will open the throat. I too hardly ever have 2 nostrils open, so I share your pain, you can still focus on nostril breathing and supplement, but also try breathing gently and longer, you will find the nostril will not contract as much. You can also mouth breath and slow it down by paying attention to the speed and depth. Try to feel the air enter and fil yor body. Don't exhale out all the way.  I am not a good runner so at about 3 miles I tend to breath a little heavy and find it really helps me to slow the breathing down and control it. It helps to regulate cadence and mind games.

Breathe Right Strips do really help to open up the nostrils.

they help but if your sinus cavities are swollen, it won't open them.

you have it wrong, you don't think about them. you do them or you don't..... I am thinking much less now and just doing more.  Still have a long way to go. Dan made a comment to me while about to jump in off a cornice, it was somethng like this...."I never met someone who thought so much about things like this"  - He should meet Gary..... ;D

Gary:

You need a "breathing coach" to talk to while skiing.  When you decide you want to work on your ski breathing, just call 1-900-LYNN.  She coaches/helps women with their breathing in labor all the time I'll bet, I'm sure she could do the same for you.

first....how do you start to just do anything....

there must be a particular sequence...

Forward pressure, neutural, hips here or there.....it's easy....

I can do it....just anything....

Inhale...through my nose, don't let it all out....exhale through my mouth..

see....I can do anthing......

Did I do it right...I mean do I hold the right amount of air in and was the exhale from the belly or just a weak chest exhale...

I'm so in trouble!? 8) g
