Mike again....I believe you could be limiting your ability to be totally comfotable in off piste conditions (ungroomed anything) if you totally rely on just the big toe...
If you watch Harold ski on video....you'll see he uses all 4 edges of his skis as all great skiers do.....remember Harold does talk about 2 footed skiing, releases, etc....

Still....whatever keeps you turning and hungrey for more on the mountain albeit BTE or LTE...it's all good!? ;D

G,
Mr. Gary's got a hungry heart, Mr. Mike's got a hungry heart......for skiing.
(sorry bruce)

My real strong wish this year is to explore some true off-piste. My reality is I'm an ice coast skier, especially in s/e Pa. On our days at Holimount in April, we were doing some work on JC's technique that included feathering more weight early onto the uphill ski and I fully intend to explore it this year in JH. It's rumored that I might have a friend there who's willing to share his So. Americian experience. It's pretty easy to transition weight onto both ski's, float more in transition and ski with flatter ski angles.

To clean up a prior question, PMTS has no claim as the only high edge technique. I just think of explaining it in high edge carving outcomes. I may very well be wrong, but, I think of JC's method as low edge. With PSIA, there's much less of a system and an individual instructor can  pretty much get to teach what they want, perhaps in a manner similar to golf instruction being different one instructor to another.

Conversations like this is why I stick to gear. It is much more black  (like a FX84) and white (like a MX78/88).

that's because you are thinking snow and not books.....

Also, since Greg is a PSIA level I I think you need to get new boots since yo ski in Lange WC120's.... You are violating your our club's rules.......

Nice Mike and we look forward to sharring some off piste turns at JH this year and hopefully some before then.

Just as a side note...having skied with, behind, next to HH, JC, other instructors, they all have PSIA foundations, PMTS, Austrian, French and other ethnic teaching schools and all can put their skis on high edge angle with awesome counter. For me, the exposure to their disciplines has been a true eye opener and great learning experience.

Having said all that....the question I always ask...what does the individual really want to get out of the snow experience each day....and my wife reminds me...not everyone on the mountain challenges themselves to make great turns every turn....many don't even think about the turns they're making.

Still for those of use who do, it's always fun talking about it and more fun doing it!....and that statement covers so many different subject matters!? >:D

Best,? ;D

Gary, "they all have PSIA foundations" this statement is not correct. Harald Harb was taught to ski by his father in Austria and then later in Canada. Other than what his father taught him as a boy, he didn't have a ski lesson again until he got on the canadian ski team, and then worked with coaches on the team. To say that he has PSIA fundations is far from the truth. Harald was a demo team member for the PSIA, and that lasted for a few seasons. He was adamant that the organization needed to shift the way that they teach. After an extended battle, he left, formed Harbskisystems, and the PSIA still tecahes the wedge and the stem christie.

I hear ya J.....maybe taking the word "foundation" too literrally....HH has had "exposure" to PSIA..yes...more correct. Hmmmmm....Canadian eh...CSIA possible exposure?

My point being.....there is a lot of cross over training with the best in the business out there and the best really do know how to lay down tracks of all kinds anywhere on the mountain no matter what discipline.

Seek and thou shall find....great motto for this application.

Best,

G

another ankle excercise for you!? Yesterday we wre doing some plyo-cardio stuff, I had done this one before but never thought of it as an ankle foot excercise but it really is a killer

stand on treadmill standing sideways, turn it on to 2mph to start with- be careful!!!? you are going to stand in a ready postiion, hands in a ski position, knees sight bent looking forward legs spread shoulder width. the idea is to use your uphill foot (foot towards the top of the treadmill) to roll sideways -the foot will roll over to the LTE and as you crab your way sideways (forward) as your downhill foot pushes away rollingo and pushig with the BTE- the movement will look static. THe feet are moving with a very light hop at the same time (not shuffling) and the body does not move= both feet must roll and hop at the same time.? Try this for the first time for 30 seconds per side. Dont be suprised if you can't do 30 seconds!? I do minute intervals now each side 6 minutes non-stop, the transition from left ot right side is actuallt the tricky part? ;)? BE CAREFUL,? can guarentee if you do these correctly your feet ankles and muscles on the side of your shins will be sore

Wow...killer I'll bet..

Any potential to sprain an ankle would be my greatest concern with this workout especially just before ski season....your thoughts?

sure, what you should do is not walk up down stairs, run, ride a bike or excercise.....? I didn't realize you had such coordination problems.....  ::)

Hmmm....not so much a co-ordination problem ......a comprehension problem..... :-\

Now..do you tip lift and jump, float, tip and hop,  ???  videos....would be helpful for my feeble mind.

For me...moderation and cross training provide the best results. I got rid of my wedge turn last year and feel set free   :P

But someday when I'm older...i wanna be like you.... ::)
