Phil's New Life

Okay, we've given you a split second to settle in to your new coast.

How is it?
Where are you in relation to Tahoe?

Please feed the "move to ski country" fantasy's the rest of us have!

And congratulations on doing it "before you're a year older". (paraphrased correctly?)

Leaving all the mid life cliches aside...it is great.

I am living in NW Reno about 30 min from Mt. Rose, 45 from Northstar and an hour from Squaw. I looked at Truckee (where I am working) to live but it was about 30% higher in cost. Ziggy is loving it out here and spends most of his time off leash, he loves to chase rabbits and coyotes although I am trying to ween him off of the latter. He also loves to go for bike rides with me ( I ride, he runs). The mountain biking even out my back door is killer.

Weather is great, I thought I saw a cloud last week but it was a jet stream and sometimes the humidity hits double digits. Needless to say, I am looking forward to skiing. There are some killer all you can eat sushi places and that has been my downfall. Many know me as a scotch & bourbon drinker but I have had maybe 4 drinks since I have been out here.

Wow! Sounds beautiful.
I really appreciated how you complain when the humidity "almost" hits double digits.
You will be in excellent condition come this winter!

BTW, high double digit humidity and only low 90's here on the sweltering east coast. :-[

Congrats Phil!! The Tahoe area is an amazing place to live. We will definitely need to catch a ski day together. I only ski Tahoe a few times per year now but I will come up for a powder day on a moments notice. I can show you around Squaw (at least this season until you end up knowing it better than I).

Start Haus is great. Jim Schaffner has done quite a bit of bootwork for me. He is one of the best that I have worlked with. We will be up in early October to get new boots for my wife.

Let's see, it's almost September. It won't be long now!!

JB,

I look forward to putting a face with the name. Give me a heads up when you are coming in.

Phil and I have spoken several times. If the tenor of his voice is indicative of his feelings, he's just doing great. From conversations and reading his thoughts over the past years, it's been his dream to live in the mountains. While I will miss skiing with him at Blue Mtn., I'm glad he decided to live his dream.

A funny aspect is that I get a fair number of voice messages from him. When I listen, he's in a conversation with someone in the shop or walking Ziggy, his dog. I'm on his speed dial  and somehow the combination gets punched in.

Hey Phil, I wore a sweatshirt this morning. Ski season's coming!

Supposedly we are heading into a La Nina year. Last year was El Nino. El Nino is always a home run for Tahoe and usually less good for the southern Rockies (Rockies in the US). Evidently La Nina is quite good for the Southern Rockies but less great for tahoe (which means more like 400 inches vs 500-600 at Squaw!!). For me in Montana it should be a good season, at least we can all hope so in August!!

I thought Tahoe was in a drought for snow last year, until the very end of the ski season.

Squaw got 561 inches of snow last year and 453 inches occurred by April 3. I thnk that's a good year in anyone's book!!
