Phil: I, for one, am completely happy that your move to the west has been rewarded with such (seemingly) Epic snow conditions.

All: But I too still remember when I first started skiing and I would hear others denigrate Vermont skiing and couldn't understand why.? Vermont seemed pretty nice compared to the local mountain.?

Jim,
Your comment got me thinking about my first Vermont experience. In my youth, we did not travel much, other than the NJ shore, so I never saw "mountains". In my first year of skiing and about 25 years old, I made a trip to Stratton. The drive up was on a full moon crystal clear night following a new snow. Up the NY thruway and into VT., I was amazed by mountains! Now I know it was the foothills of the Catskills. Stratton seemed huge by Camelback standards.

Ditto for my first time in the Rockies at Aspen. Riding up the Ruthie's ridge on the original single chair. WOW.....

And Phil, if there is one emoticon that describes you it's? >:D? >:D? >:D

When I first started skiing in my mid thirties, I remember thinking I would be happy
to just be able to ski the whole mountain at Elk.
Then it expanded to just wanting an occasional weekend in Vermont with local mountains still the mainstay.
Now, its "how many days can I get out west?"

Spoiled rotten.

I was thinking about this thread last week. Steamboat had very low light, heavy cloud coverage with no real new snow. I went up the Christy 6 pack which dumps out just below mid-mountain, skied down a run: it was har dto see and half frozen groomed....  I skied out to the base, took my skis off, headed home.....

Boot High Baby....bring it!

Hoping to get some in JH mid Jan.....it's nice to see the majority of resorts west of the Mississippi getting their fair due and them some in snow fall. Good for the skiers and water supply.

Ok...I'll take ankle high......bcbc!!!!

6"?  10"?  Lynn is skiing 24" in Central Park!!!  If only there were a POMA up the hill at the north end of the park, she could.  ;D ;D

I loved this comment in the middle of this thread.  Did you catch the "10 at the boat" internal Colorado who has the best snow "snobbery" coming out. ;D >:D  You gotta love it. So now it's not just an east vs west thread. Ron, good on ya.  Now go get some for me!

not just at the boat, 10" is the general "powder day rules" depth. 6" is still fun but a good 8-10" is when you really get the real powder experience; especially in the trees and on steeper stuff.

Well there you have it.  Out here in the east it can get funny what people call a powder day.  I was on the lift last year on a day that was snowing lightly and a young guy gushed about how much fun it was to ski in powder.  There was about 2 " on the ground.

Gary, if that is not proof of your contention, then nothing is.

I thought "Powder" meant that there wasn't any dirt or rocks visible in the snow?
