BIg Sky on March 20-26?
« on: January 10, 2011, 08:01:08 am »
I posted this up on Epic-but think I remeber some folks here have spent some quality time at Big Sky and might be able to answer this more directly:

Is the third week in March too late to ski Big Sky???  I only ask because I realize it has a ton of southern and eastern exposures.  I figure the upper mountain (at 11,000) ought to be fine, but I'm traveling with a mixed group (experts and intermediates) and it's Big Sky's terrain diversity and low skier density that attracted my attention.

I realize too that Moonlight Basin being almost all North Facing should be great (but maybe not as good for intermediates)?

Anybody have experience with Big Sky this late in the season?

Liam

Late March is perhaps the best time of the season to ski Big Sky. The largest snow storms hit Big Sky in March and April. We are in a la nina year which so far has been excellent for Southern Montana resorts all running 20-30% above normal and 50-60% above last year (as far as snow). Last year was very poor (el nino) but the previous two years, March was a very big party, with new significant snow 3-4 X per week. Bear in mind that Big Sky gets about 20% of the avarge skier volume as do most popular US resorts. It's pretty much always empty and the snow holds up great due to the lower skier counts. If you haven't skied Big Sky, you are in for a treat!! It is one big A mountain, with terrain that rivals any resort in the world.

jbotti,

Thanks for the response-that's what I was hoping to hear.

Nope, I've never been to Big Sky (but I've stared at a map of it for years ;D).

I just need two other takers to join me (to make it cost affective-my crew is being hesitant).

Thanks Again,

Liam
