Blizzard Magnesium SLR
« on: January 23, 2011, 05:04:49 pm »
Been looking for a new hard snow specific ski, recently found it.? Skis of this genre that I've skied in the last two or three years are:

Kastle RX (most recent)
Head Supershape (non-KERS)
Head Supershape Magnum
Head Supershape Speed
Head i.Speed
Fischer RX-8

I'm 6'2" 230

I've been skiing the Kastle RX up until a couple weeks ago and while it is an outstanding product, in my neck of the woods, I don't have the vertical to let it run like it needs.? Demo'd last years Blizzard Magnesium SLR in 167 for about three days and was really impressed.? Dimensions are virtually the same as the non-KERS Head Supershape which in my mind is on a short list of timeless hard snow specific skis.

The big tip on the Magnesium SLR is quick to engage and the more you push the ski the more it delivers.? Haven't experienced anything unstable on it yet.? Don't know that I'll ever ski beyond it's capabilities in terms of speed.? Nimble in every situation I've encountered and for a ski with plenty of metal, remarkably non-heavy feeling.? Tenacious edge-hold yet remarkably un-demanding in my mind.? The system binding is well built and easy to adjust.? Great build quality.

I ended up buying it in the 174 length and I like the 174 even better than the 167.

Greg,

I own a pair of the Blizzard Mag SL's 165, 13.5 m radius from about 3 years ago. Phil, in one of his least focused moments, actually bought  2 pair of SL's, one each for both he and Tyler. His mind  cleared up and sold a pair to me with all of about 5 days use. I intended to use them as my eastern daily carver last year, but, somebody made me a great deal on my iSupershapes ::), you are very well aware of the details of that transaction.

They ski a lot like the Supershape's, but are much lighter. For sure, I've got quiver overlap and I'm in a funk about what to do with them. I did one day on them this season when I took them to a demo day. I figured if I had to leave skies just sitting in the snow while I demo'd, these are the ones I could afford to have stolen. They are too good just to leave sit.

As you point out, they are undemanding carvers, handle speed very well and are nimble.

Have fun.
