Platapus for H2O Challanged Skiers
« on: February 16, 2011, 10:45:14 am »
I've started using a Platapus to carry water inside my jacket when skiing. It's heavy duty plastic collapsible bag with a standard bottle type screw cap. No plastic taste, comes in 2 sizes, fits in jacket pocket, no tube to freeze as standard hydration units encounter. Will not break or injure your chest if you happen to fall on it.

At $8 per unit, it's a great option. Plus, it can be a useful general water bottle.

So far, so good!

Interesting. Do you notice the weight inside your jacket?

I used to use a backpack with a Camel Back in it.  Stopped carrying that because of the bulk on my back and the tube would freeze up (even with the neoprene cover).

Now I use just a dedicated CamelBack but wear it inside my jacket.  On my back, so out of the way and yet small enough not to push me out of the way on the lifts. And, since the reservoir and tube are inside my jacket they don't freeze up.

Jim,
My cold weather jacket happens to have a inside pocket that is a very nice fit for the Platapus, so other than a little weight I don't notice it. Looking at some other jackets and shells, pocket space may be a problem.

I was in REI looking at small camelback units, capable of being worn inside the jacket, when the sales rep showed me the Platapus. I thought it a better solution to carrying small amounts of water. On western trips, the larger capacity of camelback is a plus. I had a nice little unit like yours, but, somehow it stayed in Jackson Hole last winter when I left. Smart camelback!  ::) My old unit was harder to clean and left a plastic taste.

FYI, search the REI website for Platapus and they have a whole line of water storage devices, but, not dedicated camelback type devices.
