Greetings From The Gathering In Summit Co.
« on: April 06, 2011, 04:20:25 am »
My east coast body is wide awake at 4 am, so here's a quick update on the Epic Gathering in Summit. Ron, Phil, Snow Hot are here and hopefully they will add some comments. Phil is the official ski supplier to the gathering plus his Epic admin stuff has him pretty tied up.

My transit day (Sunday) was interesting in that I70 was closed in many places due to snow, including the tunnel and Vail pass. The Epic team was in Vail, but, could not get out until early evening. Of skiing note, Vail closed it's lifts due to lightning, yes, you read that right - lightning. The good was it only lasted an hour and the snows that fell was light and massive. All left smiling. From my room I can see I70 and the Dillon exit. Traffic was a nightmare.

Monday was Breck following close to a foot of new powder. Sun but windy (gusts near 50 up high) but for the most part very skiable and a great day. Epic breaks the group up and a local serves as leader and guide to show off the mountain. I had a Uncle Louie who was an instructor there for 20 plus years. He was just great to ski with as he knows where the powder stahes are hidden.

Tuesday was A base. Sunny and windy. Again the conditions were great following the snow. Nowhere near the new pow at Breck, but, still great skiing. My first visit to Montezuma Bowl on the backside, more groomed than I expected unless willing to do some hiking ( but at that altitude, I'll pass ). Again, skiing with a local is a bonus and the level of skiing in the group is pretty high and I don't ski with the best. Winds closed most lifts for about an hour but reopened and ran a little slow. My afternoon was spent recovering from Breck and the altitude. A base has just spectacular views high up near the continental divide, small but classic skiing.

the group dinner last night with about 25 will be talked about for years on Epic. You just had to be there, a very, very funny evening.

Vail today, come on body, I promise we can recover all summer.

Awesome. So did the radioactive snow ski any different than regular snow.  Glowing boots or ski bottoms??  >:D

Very glad that you got such great conditions.  I think this global warming thing has been good for the ski resorts this year.

Are you allowed to mention PMTS at the gathering???  >:D >:D(JOKING!!!)

Sounds like a blast. It's a wonderful day when you have
guides that can show you the mountain.

Not exactly Elk! ;)

Well gang, the good life caught up with us today. While we were high at A base, it got very warm in the valley and Vail. An overnight freeze coupled with cloudy conditions, resulted in snow, no make that boiler plate, that did not soften much. One tough day to ski, especially because we were at Vail. It was so frustrating riding lifts and looking at snow that appeared as fluffy as what we saw the past two days, but, it was frozen solid and unskiable.  We got through, found a few trails that worked, happy hour and dinner were great.  Kastle 88's will need some edge work tonight.

The aspect of the gathering that just differentiates it is that I got to ski with 40 friends I never met before. All are just like those who post here, really passionate about skiing.

Tomorrow is another day, maybe some snow tonight. It's warm so we'll see.

Still, really glad I'm here.

LP:  That's an awesome report  >:D  Cause sometimes its about the people and not actually about the skiing.

Lynn et al,

The Epic Gathering is a blast, I met so many new friends that I would love to ski with again. It reminded my of meeting Gary and Ron 3? years ago in Jackson Hole. That event enriched my life, (note to self - ski with Gary next year). Each day we would break up into new small groups and go explore. I can't keep up with the best of the group (about a dozen out of 40), but, no mistake all can ski pretty well. Many stayed in the same Quality Inn and we would meet at 7 for breakfast, ski all day and then about 15 or more would go out for dinner. Does not get much better and there is no better way to end the ski year than the "beach party" at A-Basin.

PMTS was discussed much more than I expected. On the very first day, all of the 5 people that I skied with, including the L3 PSIA instructor who was our guide, gave me props for my style (ok, put your ego back in check big guy). That opened the door to PMTS discussion I could "walk the walk" on technique. I was asked by several for a demonstration and would do a simple tipping drill that they could try. Many told me the continued to work on this because it improved the quality of turns. Epic instruction gets described sometimes as though it came from one individual and that is not the case. The people in my group would ask "what is the difference between the two schools". The L3 instructor told me his style has more of PMTS in it than PSIA. One excellent PMTS skier Geoffda, was with the group for two days and his skiing just stands out. There was an "ad-hoc" seminar on the mountain where my L3 guide and Geoffda showed the differences between the PSIA up movement and the PMTS flex release. So there was a lot of good discussion.

Next year the Gathering will be in Tahoe and it's now high on my agenda. It's about people who love to ski and enjoy the company of others.

BTW, on our day a Vail, the only good skiing was on groomers under short lifts.......very Elk Mountainish.

I also met new Real Skiers member High Angles. My lips will remain sealed until he comes out, but, welcome to a new PMTS'er.

Considering all the snow we've had in Tahoe, I really wondered about my sanity at driving 13 hrs to ski Colorado, but I reminded myself that it wasn't about the skiing, it was about the people.

Mike it was awesome meeting you.  I'm just getting caught up after a long drive home from Colorado and an extra day on snow with my good friend Bob Barnes.
We found some awesome snow in Spaulding bowl and I got a chance to swap my Goode Carbon poles for a pair of Scott TheSki poles that I noticed a lady using.
That was a humourous experience....
At any rate, Phil now has a pair of poles that match his TheSki

All in all, it was a phenomenal ski trip and I loved meeting up with new friends and old friends..........Li fe is Epic!!!

Sometimes you just need to let your Bad Self ski!!

I can tell you are having trouble leaving your wonderful ski time behind.
Lots of posts on epic and every time I go to see if there's anything interesting, you are online.

Hmmm, I guess I am having trouble leaving skiing behind as well!
I really enjoyed looking at all the pics posted.

Let's try to make Elk a couple of times next year!
And I will try to remember the Elk "Demo" date for sure.

Lynn,

Women are so intuitive and insightful. Yes, this past ski season is dying a very hard death. Not just the recent trip, I just really enjoyed the year and most of all, the people I met and skied with. Tomorrow begins our long weekends at the house at the So. Jersey beach community, where I return to yesteryear without internet connection (a privilege - not a hardship). My internet skiing behavior must be extinguished and replaced with long cycling rides in constant ocean side wind. Not to mention the never-ending "to-do's" associated with owning a second home. I'm sure you know that drill very well. It has been a long week.

And yes, we all need to ski together more next year! Let's all do some planning and make it happen.

Your words bring me comfort.

Mike
