TRX Kicks Your Butt
« on: August 16, 2011, 06:02:57 am »
Hi All,

For some time now, I've been avoiding training activities for my core and upper body, something that needed getting done, but, I never had the discipline on my own. A new fitness center opened near the summer home and I've signed up for a 2x per week one hour fitness session using a training device called TRX. The sessions are very intensive, work all muscle groups and are a major cardio high pulse workout. In a couple of hours, I'll be in my 3rd session. The first two sent muscles into major ache and the next day was a cardio rest day. At least until I get some more strength, not sure I could do more than twice per week as I need to recover.

One benefit is that there are 10 TRX devices available in the group training room, so far it's been myself and at least 8 women. Without the aerobic bike work to date, I don't think I could last anywhere near an hour, and, I do take extended breaks frequently to catch my breath.

Rather than try to explain TRX, below is a you tube video.

I was cycling 5 days per week, and TRX replaces 2 of those days. No need for interval training on a bike after TRX.

A basic TRX device package can be purchase for about $200

Wish me continued luck!

If my husband were alive, he would be laughing his ass off!

He trained with and strongly encouraged the use of stretch bands for YEARS
instead of weights.
These are a  prettier variation of the systems he used.

Looks like a great work out!
Sounds like you are wisely listening to your body and resting within the class when appropriate.

Thanks for posting. I was very curious.

Lynn:

I'm not sure the bands stretch.  I think the bands are nylon straps, and the weight you are moving is your own.

Mike.

8 women in the room with you -- no wonder it's a high pulse rate workout.   :D

Jim is correct in that TRX uses nylon straps and not rubber band. The resistance is provided by body weight.

I've had 3 different instructors now and the specific exercises change. Today, Bosu, medicine balls and Kettleballs supplemented the TRX. The movements can become complex and take some getting used to. Generally, 2 different movements are done for 30 seconds each and then repeated. A quick break and then the pattern is repeated. So it's work for 4 minutes then a minute off to learn the next exercise patterns.

No way on earth I'd be able to do this outside of the group session.

Don't know the medical term for the pain that develops 24 to 36 hours after a major muscle is put thought the program, but, I'm living proof that shoulders, thighs, abs,  etc. are sending messages I've not heard in a long time.

DOMS = "delayed onset muscle soreness" = fancy way of saying we physicians aren't really sure why you start hurting after a while, so we'll create a fancy way of saying that.

Whoa Mclivingproof.....f antastic!

I can see why you get the "ouchies" after a workout like that. Glad to see you're looking for new ways to stay fit. The body needs new challenges to maintain solid fitness. I also think as we get older, we need to be constantlay aware of the feedback our body is giving. We need to know when to stop and when to push so as to get the maximum benefit and that "yeah, I want to keep doing this" feeling!

So the best to ya! I can guarantee you'll see positive on snow results come ski season.

Undone be a sneeze and a hurricane!

Last Sat. I did this great workout routine on the beach. Great morning, clear, warm, calm ocean. 40 minutes into the workout, felt a small tweak in my upperback muscles, so I stopped early. No surprise, in hindsight, as the workouts are more intense than my soft core. For 2 days, had some mild discomfort......the n, I had to sneeze. The "Ah" part went ok, but, the "cho" never happened as my back muscles spasmed. Wow, 15 minutes of torture. Still in recovery, back exercise is shut down for a few more days.

And, my summer home area went under mandatory evacuation, as the eye path of the hurricane is directly overhead. The same great beach I did my workout on will be "Living Hell" for 20 hours starting this evening.  85 mph winds are not fun on a 60 year old house. Signed a contract for a new roof last week, if I did not need one really bad last week, I surly will when the hurricane passes, so at least I have some priority with the roofer. The Jersey shore is a great summer way of life for those on the east coast. It's going to take a beating. JB has earthquakes, Gary has the great NY winter snow, we have all have some weather issue!

The winds will play hell on power in Philly due to large tree conditions, so, expect my next post when you see it. Take care all. Things can be fixed, your health is much more important.

Hey Mike....I know the drill..messed up my lower back a few months ago and don't even know how. Been work with a Chiro Dr. who uses active pressure to release muscles impacted by scar tissue or loss of flexibility. He wisely added a series of stretching yoga type exercises that have helped immensely along with his treatments. Heal soon my friend.

I heard this morning Phili got lots of water along with the winds...stay safe!

    G,
Never been to a Chiro, maybe it's time to try something new!

Irene has been much kinder than the dire predictions. Beach home was visited by a friend and no damage at all, from the exterior. Need to have power to return. Regular home had some minor water in basement for the first time ever during a 4 hour period when the major rain bands went through. Power always on, so my wet-dry Shop Vac was used to remove about 150 gal of water. Man-cave is safe!

Time to start rethinking ski season and training for same.

Well thank goodness Irene was only the bridesmaid and not the bride.
Our son is near Washington and said minor damage and power outage...all well.

I'm sure you'll heal before too long..(it's always too long for us)...be well and yeah...

Skiing is a few months away, time to heal and strengthen!
Best, g
