Your most memorable ski happenings.
« on: October 06, 2011, 12:41:09 pm »

But falling in the trees like that infamous, WideWorld of Sports worthy, fall that HelluvaSkier took into the trees a while back is NOT one that I would get up smiling from.

I split this off from the Goals topic, since HelluvaSkier had another story, and maybe there are others.

Good or bad, what are some of exhilarating or embarrassing ski stories that stick in your memory.

Should have seen the stunt I pulled last year... Had a repeat of that, but with a bigger tree and no powder in the woods.  :o

You probably should have been on MUCH wider skis??  More flotation in the air!!  8)

By the time I made it into the air I only had one ski on, so I definitely needed the extra floatation. The other ski turned into a missile.

I was feeling guilty for hijacking the other thread before it even got to a second page.
Moderated myself before Midwif did.

I'm pretty easy going. No complaints here.

For something other than crashing... My last two days on snow last year were memorable. Had some "ah-ha" moments...

One day was at Loveland and I spent some time skiing bumps on OTR and A-Bowl... definitely took my bump skiing to a new level just by getting some much needed time in bumps and applying what I already knew how to do. It put my bump skiing close to the level that my carving is at now.

Last day on snow was at A-Basin... had one run that I would classify as one of my best and most memorable runs ever. Had nice, light untouched powder down the east wall and then skied to the base on whatever that groomer is...  just as it was setting up with the sun hitting it - so nice and firm and grippy. Used a GS-style turn in the powder [think Japanese 4ce cut the wind type skiing] and carried the same movements all the way to the base in some really strong high edge angle [fairly tight] carved turns.

Highangles was there on both days I think...

I keep replaying it all in my head in the hopes that I can repeat it once I hit snow this year.

First, the positive.

In my early 20's, I took my first western trip and went to Aspen. I will always remember the first morning, a foot of new snow, brilliant blue sky riding up what was then the single chair over the Ruthie's Run. I was in awe of the magnificent Colorado mountains. I stayed very late and just as they were closing the mountain, I did a non-stop run which will always be with me. Still have pictures from that trip and they bring back so many great memories from when I was just a little younger than Bushwacker. PS - I did think I was immortal, time has taught much.

Second,

At Mad River Glen, on a sunny, cold day, was riding the single chair with one arm around the pole the chair is attached to, head resting on same pole, just catching some sun. Then the chair dropped straight down for at least 10 feet. The wire cable system had come free of the bullwheel at the top of the mountain and the lack of tension caused the chairs to drop. Then the concrete counterbalance weights at the bottom kicked-in and re-tensioned the cable system. I shot straight back up and the just kept moving up and down for several seconds. I was about 6 chairs from the top and all ahead of me were catapulted out of their chairs and laying on the snow, some very seriously injured. My arm around the pole saved me. It was a panic filled several minutes half expecting the entire cable to snap. Took about an hour before the ski patrol evacuated me, and that's me who does not like heights. Watching and listening to those injured is a very bad memory. To this day, I use the system bar system on chairs and keep it down until very close to the end.

Got dropped onto a MRG double black mogule run and I was in no condition to ski it. My wife and friends knew I was skiing that chair and were convinced I was seriously injured as it took so long to get down. The balance of the day was spent in the bar. Never been back to MRG.

Nice!!

My revelations may have had something to do with who I was spending time with after skiing each day too...

WOW, Living Proof.  Those two make the whole thread worthwhile.

Several years ago, skiing Winter Park with my son.  I didn't start skiing until I was in my 50's, and I was the epitome of a terminal intermediate, in my late 50's, and purely a 10 day a year east coast skier.  A very heavy snow/ice pellet fell all morning, and I was just really struggling.  Struggling with the snow, struggling with goggles fogging over, pretty miserable.

Finally my son said, "Well, you know dad, at your age you may just have to accept that you aren't going to get any better."

A "memorable day" indeed, but that started the search.  A ski patrol friend steered me to Lito Tejada-Flores, which helped a little bit, and somewhere along that same path I got Harald's first book and also connected with the Realskiers site.  Harald's writing style matched well with my style of learning - it was eye opening.  I've gotten a bit better since then, but things you pick up later in life are never quite as natural as those you learn young.

One of my favorite runs I was skiing at a resort in Canada called Searchmont. It was snowing like a banchie and I was skiing my favorite location along the edge in about 8 inches of fresh pow on top of the 4 that fell the day before. Sking along  side with some friends out on the main part of the run. I was making short turns when my friends just saw me disappear.  I remember falling through the air, landing and just continued skiing. My friends remember seeing me disapper and then a explosion of snow and me skiing coming thought the powder in the air. They said afterwords they thought for sure I would have been tumbling down the mountain with all the snow in the air. I went and looked after it stopped snowing and I had hit a 8 foot drop into amazing pow.

What a rush that was and it ended "perfecto"! Still brings smiles to my face...

Now...where were the cameras when I needed them!   8)
