Well I pulled the trigger on a new GoPro HD Hero 960 after reading reviews, making comparisons and speaking with Ron who has used his GoPro this last season. I also purchased the chest mount strap based on past helmet cam experience. I purchased the Contour a few years ago but found it awkward to use on the helmet mount. Video was good, wind nosie was awful and I had a hard time knowing when it was on or off.  With the chest mount...on and off will certainly be easier, less chanse of getting knocked off and I just think more stable.

I've looked at side by side comparaison video of the two and they look pretty darn close. Although I opted out of the 1080 video because for the extra cost and speaking with peeps about that value...it was minimal ROI.

I figure with the ski trips with friends and that knee high pow I'm going to find this season...should be some fun shots.

BONUS...my 3 year granddaughter starts skiing this season...should be tons of memorable video there.

The GoPro looks easy to use, the chest mount should work out perfect, its small, lightweight, water and shock proof. So, mount it, turn it on, point and go....Looking forward having some fun with it.

I would have sold you mine cheap!! One of those gadgets that I never use. Having said that for the right person these can be fun. I just happen to like video shot by someone other than the skier a lot more.

The way I've used it in the past in shooting video of people skiing towards me, me skiing  behind them and skiing along side them..

They in-turn should be able to strap on the chest mount and reciprocate...

It's always a fun way to commemorate a ski trip with friends with all skiing towards and by you...and pass that along to them.

Still...I want to get one of those snow flying in the face of the camera pow days so mid July I can take a peek and bring back that pow day smile.

For those that don't visit Gapic ski, our friend Bob Peter's posted this little out-of-area gem today, and, done with helmet mounted Video Cam. Very very cool. I am jealous. I wanna go there and do this. I need to ski this stuff. etc, etc, etc.

2.please editted it down un-editted POV video is the worst and makes me wish that the damn things had a common sense test before being sold to people.

If you happen to capture Maria Riesch skiing a groomer, or a skier of similar artfulness, I'd gladly watch despite rule 1.  After all, rules were made to be broken

Not sure there is anything more intense and fun than what we saw this weekend at Soelden. Hip on snow in every turn and all on solid glacial ice!! Anyone can ski pow, only a handful can carve turns like this on a pitch like Soelden.

groomer skiing is ok to watch, just not from a POV. I have yet to see one POV of groomer skiing with out gates that is any bit interesting.

Even POV of Lightey skiing a wide open groomer would be boring.

Max...I've seen some pretty good sporting GoPro video's of biking, surfing and skiing...didn't notice where a OS was missing in those.

Besides you guys...I'm not using this for teaching or analyzing...for me, it's just to have fun remembering the day and what we skied in...be it groom, pow, trees, bumps...just fun stuff, not for posting.

Man you guys are way intense! Ought to pass around some chill pills!

Still, we all different opinions on what's fun to do and to see...enjoy yourself....please!

BW:  Point well taken, in general I would agree.  Helluvaskier did have a video of him skiing on groomed slopes at high speeds that was anything but boring.

his video was all 3rd person, there wasnt a single Point of View Shot in that video.

POV(point of view) video of groomers is really lame, its like POV of riding a road or bike path.

Actually I was referring to a video that Helluvaskier posted on the PMTS forum some time back.  I found it interesting, and there wasn't a single POV view in that either.
I understand that your standard or expectation is POV shots --  but that is merely your expectation for a certain genre of skiing (and mtn biking).
I've watched video of Jean Claude-Killy skiing and immensely enjoyed his rhythm and smoothness, and there wasn't any POV components to that skiing either.
Actually, I've been watching the World Series on Fox and they don't have any POV shots either.  That doesn't invalidate your statement about the popularity of POV shots in off-piste skiing and in mountain biking, BUT it also doesn't make that the only acceptable format for all uses.

This thread is getting a little carried away. I'm with Gary in that POV shooting is about fun and capturing a little of your skiing. Same applies to third party video skiing It's not so serious, there are no rules. Turn off the judgmental aspects and accept it for what it is. We have free skiers and we have technical skiers in the forum...we all make turns. Point and counterpoint is becoming too much of a way of life.

Anyone who has sat through a video or slides or photo's knows that most need editing. After a couple of minutes, it all looks the same and becomes boring, boring, boring. Warren Miller, and his peers, know that intuitively. The great thing about internet video is that the stop button can be pushed at will.
