Maintaining Waterproofing on Jackets
« on: October 31, 2011, 07:27:22 am »
As for durability, most people wear a jacket or pants for 3-5 seasons before they decide to get something new (and for me pants age faster than Jackets). Most skiers do not wear out their outerwear, and all the major brands hold up well for that amount of time especially if you wash them with Nik wax and apply more DWR after several washings.

JB is great knowledge resource.

The topic is timely as I just spent a day in a very wet snow event at a Penn State football game and my 8 year old North Face Parka is need of surface water repellant. The waterproofing Goretex still works fine as I did remain dry, but, the exterior has lost all it's water shedding ability. I've used Grangers wash in the past, need to make a buy for this season. I've not used a DWR (durable waterproof replant), but, I need to now.

REI has page on care and restoration:

A surprising recommendation is to wash then heat the material in a dryer for 20 minutes as it improves waterproofing.

Any thoughts on specific products. REI has a ton of products, many with reviews.

I have only used Nikwax and I have followed the directions on their product labels and on their website which have worked well. One of the most important things is to make sure you never use regular detergent on any gore tex like material. Generally you only need a new DWR coat after 4-6 washings.

Hey Mikey...Ditto on JB....

With my 10,000/10,000 waterproof and breathabiltiy, I've had good luck with Nickwax products...worked great for re-waterproofing and there was no dryer toasting involved.

I'm wondering how the 20,000/20,000 on my new pants and jacket will work out this season.....

anyone have similar stat's on their pants and jacket?

I only ski when it is sunny... or the sun shines when I ski.  :P

Just kidding... last jacket I waterproofed (training jacket) I used something designed for tents. It worked well.

Edit: Only sort-of kidding.  ;D

Certainly we eastern skiers are a hardy bunch...akin to the postal delivery man...rain, snow, sleet, grapple, fog, mush, ice, crud....and lots and lots of clouds...

Of course because we love to ski, the snow is ALWAYS perfect if there are 2 boards under our feet.

Tent waterproof eh?....well H...what color is that jacket now? Just kidding...!

Certainly another reason western woman ski in Bikini's out west....it's ALWAYS perfect there....yes...inde ed!  ;)

Strange you should bring that up. I went skiing with the "Bronx Fischer Babe" this weekend who was demoing some of the Fischer ski line and wearing similar attire.  :D

Plenty of snow in Central Park :D And all underground utilities, so your power stays on.

OK, so --- a picture today but none tomorrow.
Lynn and I had our bike ride interrupted by 12" of snow and temps in the 30's, so were being a bit silly.
We were remembering the "Lange Girls" of the past, and she had her new Fischer Progressor 8's, and one thing led to another and, voila --- the Fischer Ski Babe skiing on a blue-bird day in the world renowned "Backyard Bowls" was born.  As demanded.

THREAD DRIFT?  Yeah, a little bit, I think.
Can we get back to water proofing jackets now?
