Waxy on temp off
« on: February 01, 2012, 07:16:32 am »
When I head out the door skiing, I try to have a wax on that covers the temps for the days ahead. The ranges on the waxes might give me a 10-12 degree window. I've found that colder temps don't seem to slam the brakes on the skis and make the skittery as the warm temps.

This past 5 days of skiing, temps were all over the place....from cold in the 20's to warm near 50...well beyond the 23-36 degree coverage of my wax. My wife has always been a fan of Zardox....a secret sauce that she says really helps her skis glide. I really never bothered or was a believer...really didn't want anything liquid mucking up my bases.

Well after some recent big temp swings to warm, I tucked a container in my jacket pocket. Yesterday the temps soared warm so I put a quick coat of Zardox on the bases and off I went to ski spring snow. Within 30 min the guys were complaining of sticky skis....not me...yet. After about 2 hours I started to get a bit of sticking but it was 11:40 and time for us to fuel up. Before I went in, I put on another coat of the glide juice and spent the last 2 hours of skiing in the soft snow with no sticking or skittery skis.

This stuff really works....thanked my wife profusly when I arrived home. There appears to be no probs with the bases. They'll get a good brushing before they get the next "temp specific" was...BUT....Zardox will be in my jacket ....just in case temps push warmer than the wax covers.

Gary, it sounds like zardox is for warm temps and slush. I have the opposite problem in Montana. The skis tend to stick whe I have wax good for 10F-32F and I get temps that are sub zero F. If I know it's coming I can put a layer of Swix Extreme Cold powder on the night before and that really helps, otherwise youu are better off with no wax at these temps.

Nice to have a solution that works and can be apllied on the mountain!!

Gary,
Zardoz has been discussed many times in the Epic Tuning forum. Below is from their rep who contributed to one thread. There is also discussion about Zardoz clogging the pores of the base, so it needs to be gotten out prior to rewaxing. Way too much for my poor brain.

Thanks for using our Zardoz product. I am the sales and marketing director and I wanted to jump in here. We have found from many users that in the colder, drier snow, you will find Zardoz will "stick." In wet, warm snow, Zardoz dominates. We created a low fluoro (white) hard wax for those drier, colder conditions because users where experiencing the sticking sensation.

Yes many of our testers  (patrolers, instructors, racers) have found that Zardoz can extend the life of the wax by several days.

Personally, I enjoy hot waxing my base. I love the process and the skill that it develops. However, when you are on a vacation and you get back to the condo after 3 or 4 days of hard skiing or boarding, you don't really want to spend an hour slumped over your skis with an iron. You want to kick back with a beer and talk about that epic mogul run. Zardoz lets me do that. I apply every day of a vacation to make sure my wax stays put.

I find that everyone has their preferred waxing process and I would never claim that Zardoz is the end all be all of waxes. I encourage you to try to use it in your own way that enhances your style and conditions on your slopes. Conditions change every day and you may find that one day is perfect for Zardoz and the next day is not. But, no matter what, it's better to have SOMETHING on your base rather than NOTHING!

Thanks Guys...and Mike...nice to post that here.

Didn't know it does not work on dry cold snow but that's an area I have not had a problem with. Mostly for me when the temps swing up beyond my temp coverages.

Now I probably won't be having any problem with clogging bases because I'm big on hot scrape waxes and brushing out skis. BUT for those warm days when sticking skis mess up the glide, Zardoz (spelled correctly) is a great temporary fix.

thanks guys for clarifying where it works best.
