How much is enough??
« on: March 05, 2012, 10:33:57 pm »
Lynn and I had an extremely enlightening day skiing with Diana Rogers on Saturday.

But what I wanted to share and open for discussion here was from a discussion on the first chair ride.

I have often been confused by PMTS. My analogy, that I shared with Diana, was that it sometimes feels like following a sequence of directions from MapQuest without really ever knowing the destination.

Her response, which just knocked my socks off, was "the destination is determined by each individual." That was real eye-opening to me, and I realized that I had been thinking of it much like a school curriculum, if you passed the classes then you got "the degree."
And I think we all do it to some degree. In response to movement analysis, it's not unusual to hear reviewers say something similar to "tip more, flex more!".  But  how much is enough, and why do we want to tip more.

It seems so obvious now, but maybe worth saying that our "walk in the world of skiing" is based on us --- what we want to accomplish, where we are in terms of age and in physical abilities, and what we are willing to invest in terms of time, money and effort.  And unlike some other activities, there isn't even any standard such as "par" to measure where we stand when compared to some "average".

So when someone is seeking improvement in their skiing, maybe the first question is "what is YOUR destination" rather than assuming that "their goals" are the same as mine?  I've done this without really realizing it in biking. Sometimes the "destination" has been making it up a hill that defeated me earlier in the year, or riding a metric, or then riding a Century.  I think, for me, that next year I will give more thought to "what do I want to accomplish in these three months of skiing" and some thought also to how I might measure it.

Advantages of on snow assessments

As I have mentioned several times, I have a fairly neutral alignment.  I have a little bit of forefoot varus and that is compensated for in my foot bed.

Imagine my surprise when after three turns under Diana's critical eye, she says "we need to get rid of your bow-leggedness".  This is not static bow-legged, but clearly is an effective on the snow bow-legged assessment, because testing with a couple of shims made an immediate difference in my skiing.

So now after getting 2mm on my left boot and 1.5 on my right, I guess I need to correct my comment to say that I have a fairly neutral static alignment.

I have always wanted to be the best skier that I can be. Starting at age 42 I have always known that there would be a ceiling. What has continually amazed me is that I have surpassed my wildest expectations and my ceiling goes higher every year.

If you keep hanging out with Diana, your ceiling and your expectations will be rising as well. I think that,s a good thing.

Those days where I feel a sense of accomplishment about where my skiing is now are great days. One of the keys in life is to appreciate the many gifts we are given daily. Being able to ski and thoroughly enjoy it is one of those great and amazing gifts.

And it is a gift that binds us all on this forum!

Thought you may be the only one to catch that reference.  ;D

Incidentally when I posted I was watching the original.

We do a mens weekend in Montana every year and 60% of the guys are from the business. We watch the original on one night every year. Actually leaving today for that gathering so the timing is appropro.

So how was the week?! I've seen a few pics and it looks like the weather you had was amazing.

Back on the topic of the new movie: you have no idea how tempted I am to tailor the "do you ride?" quote to skiing when someone asks me how I ski.  ;D

The movie is Wall Street 2.

Heluva, the week was fun and everyone's skiing improved (except maybe for Max and Harald). It wasn't the powderfest we had last year but for working on stuff the lack of pow was probably better.

We actually had warm temps but the upper mountain that goes up to almost 10k feet stayed nice the whole time. We got a few 2-4" drops which helped refresh.

Yeah, that would be a fun line to use when someone asks if you ski :D

It's an inside joke, but did anyone else notice that Lynn is countered to the left when all the other avatar's show counter to the right.
If Lynn walks out an elevator or doorway, she is very prone to turn left -- even when a right turn leads her home.

I suppose everyone favors one direction.

It's also a source of amusement at the NE PMTS gatherings.  The common area and breakfast room are to the right after climbing a flight of stairs.  Despite being in clear view, Lynn has unusual difficulty navigating her way to them  ;D
