Don't Anger The SKI Gods
« on: February 20, 2013, 07:55:36 pm »
So it has been a tradition that some golf buddies and I attend at least a day or so of the Accenture Match Play in Marana as it is just a short drive for us. I was in a bit of a quandary in that the semi-local ski hill had gotten 14" overnight and expected to get up to a couple of feet in the next day or so.  On the way down to the match play I was speculating about the skiing conditions at the hill.

Once we arrived, it quickly became obvious that I had angered the ski gods for my apparent lack of committment.. :o

That was a grave infraction against Ullr; rectification will require a human sacrifice.  Which one of your nonbeliever golf buddies will it be?

Oh...definately the one that I outdrive by 30 yrds, hit as many GIR as but who seems to surgically get up and down to beat me by a couple of strokes and win lunch more often than not...Although, I have to wait till after June as he is my partner at a yearly Reno/Tahoe trip.

I may have to donate my raincheck tickets from today to the cause as the lure of new snow at the ski hill is proving too great....I thought about killing two birds with one stone by carting my skis to the course...but I am afraid the terrain would be too gentle even to my standards....and the greenskeeper probably wouldn't approve... :o

Byron,

Never, never post that you did anything other than ski on a powder day! Gary there is only one way to incur  G's wrath and you found it.

Dude....what were you thinking??? ;D

How bout Tiger and Rory getting bounced on the first day. Love it, although I can hear the TV sponsors moans. Rory switched clubs this year, an almost certain kiss of death for  the year. Good thing this downward slide does not happen to skiers.

Gary....as a matter of fact, I set the DVR and skidaddled to the hill..... ;D  Actually, when I arrived it was nearer 16-18" of fresh. The wind and road conditions kept quite a few away...It was realy windy part of the day but once I unpuckered from the dicey drive up and got on the hill....the day was spetacular...Unfort unately, family committments brought me back after only a day...but not to worry....I am headed back up there Monday to stay and ski at least two days this week. They got another 4" dusting last night.

LP..stick change may indeed affect Rory for awhile...although he played pretty solid except for a couple loose iron shots at the wrong time...e.g., when your opponent chips in for  birdie x 2 and smashes a 3 wood to a three foot eagle. :o   We usually try and go the first day or so to watch because the tourney is notorious for retiring top seeds early.

This year....tradition of attendance broken in favor of a day of champagne (well maybe windy boones farm) powder and a great time on the hill.... ;D

:-[ Geez B....you had me worried for a moment! But relieved to hear you white knuckled it through nasty awesome conditions to get to the treasure...

I can rest easy today!  :D

Yes, Mike knows I get just a wee bit amped up....just a wee bit when fresh snow exceeds ankle high....and that's only with a 1/2 cup of coffee!  :-\

So B.....was there plenty of untrouched snow to leave tracks in?  What boards where you pleasuring yourself on?

There was indeed untracked until well into the morning. I don't have a wide ski (yet) so I was rockin my Head Rev 85's. The skiing was great. A few areas up to knee deep or so. Havent skied much powder so it took me a few runs to get it sorta figured out....I needed to be smoother and patient, soften my angles and stay in rhythm.

Accidentally got it right on a couple of runs and felt like a champ....well worth the white nuckle drive.... ;D

Nice Byron...I've heard great things about the Head Rev 85...

Glad ya got your toes in some deeper stuff....and sounds like after a few ohoh's, it started to click.

Your words "smoother and patient, soften my angles" right on target...If I may add to your "stay in rhythm"...what I find helps me with the rhythm part is keeping the arms in the ready position (never letting a shoulder or arm fall behind) and keeping the pole swings and touches moving with the body...."doin the dance"!

Glad to hear you'll be getting more this week. Enjoy the treat!

Best, G

Great advice G...I will definately work on the "dance". Usually when I feel out of sync, I notice I have fallen back into bad habbits and the tendency to become lazy with my posture, arms and pole plants.
