Just letting yo know my magnums just arrived!  Yeeee--hhaaaaaaaaaaa

bases are nearly perfect, excellent structure with a couple of minor scratches. Tops are perfect, edges are sweet. Bindings are fine. I may want to swap out and keep these around.... I need to confirm that if i take these off, the holes will allign with the standard RFD 12's.

All I can say is, save the box, I am sure these will be seeing the UPS man before they see Steamboat.

well, if I do return them, i need to decide soon. I flexed along side the Dynastars, these things are marshmallows!  Very soft flexing ski. For some reason I thought they were supposed to be firm boards? Yikes they are soft. ???

I liked that Dynastar much more than I expected when I skied it. It is a very good hard snow ski.

LTds sold last night. Also, the flex on the magnum is interesting, very soft in the tip and nice even flex through the ginding. gets substantially stiffer in the tail. The dynastar is much different pattern. I think the flex of the magnum makes it so versitile.  That said,  I could retunr these and go to the Blizzard in thier 172... >:D

Ron,

Are they more uniform in torsional stiffness from tip to tail?or does torsional stiffness follow the same soft in tip, firm in tail pattern as longitudinal stiffness?? Overall, how stiff are they torsionally?

Ron.? I'm actually glad to hear you say that. I also thought they flexed softer than my Head i.SL Chips, and that was one of the things that attracted me to them.? Wanted something with the SuperShape construction, bit wider in the waist, and a little bit more adaptable to my skill set by not being as demanding as the original SuperShapes.

You may actually find that these are a pretty good match as your technique has progressed.? What I have been thinking that as I try to "be like Gary" and include more of Clendinin's thinking into my skiing, a bit softer shovel that is still torsionally pretty stiff would allow me to make turns at slower speed and also do trees or bumps better.

Of course, I've never demoed either one so can't really say much other than what I've heard others say.? PatProf RAVES about his Magnums, and he had Nordica Top Fuels and another pretty stiff ski prior to the Magnums. He is an ex-instructor that skis about 5 days per week here in the east, and his Magnums are the first ski in several years that he plans to keep for an extra year.

UPDATE: ?Ok, I really took them and compared to the LTDs as I know the performance of the LTDS and the SS's.

What I like: I like the supersoft tip and first foot, kind of a few inches beyond the snow contact line. It remains soft and consistent underfoot, by the back of the binding however, the ski becomes signifiantly stiffer. Much more so than the LTD, in fact, the ski is almost (exageration) the opposite of the LTD. The LTD is fairly soft in the tip but them gets ?noticeably stiffer from the top 2/3's on down, then it gets markedly softer in the tail.

What I don't like: I am just a little worried about the 170 for me but I think I'll be OK. I think the ski will have a broad performance envelope but I am not positive about how I will like it in more piled stuff. I do like the wider feel under foot, more of the freight train effect. Here's what I am considering:

I now have the Blizzard Argos in a 180, this is an awesome ski and I am very psyched about it. I also have the SS mags. I am strongly considering some thing in the middle that can also serve as a two ski quiver when traveling. With the airlines banging so much on the baggage, it could be a problem dragging around 2 pairs. gary has wisely suggested waiting to see how I like the SS magnum in varied conditions but Phil has suggested I go with a Blizzard 8.1 or 8.7 as a filler ski. I can use the same binding on any Blizzard so I just need the ski flat. I actually like the Blizzard Cronus... >:D

Jsut learned that Demo Bindings SP130's are actaully on a CP13 carve plate, not on a RF. I spoke with Micheal B and he knows the setup very well. It's kind of like a hybrid setup. Its a FF/Moj15 toe, not sure about the heel.  the bidning acts like a FF but the heel doesn't slide back. I am checking with one source about getting a regular FF binding very cheap but otherwise, I think I will leave. Much thanks to Lynn for offering her LD's. If anyone has a line on the Green FF binding that is cheap, let me know, i can't have my setup looking shabby next to Jim's.....
