Keeping up the momentum.....
« on: June 30, 2010, 08:01:59 am »
Okay folks,

What tentative plans are fomenting in the back of those ski brains?

Who is thinking of skiing where this coming season?

I may have to live mostly vicariously thru all of you this coming season.

Kid in college and living abroad for a semester is
putting a serious trough in my ski budget! :'(

If possible, I want to do a Summit Cty trip mid winter. ;D
Jim and I are thinking of staying east coast this december and hope ski conditions are do-able in vermont or NH.
Preferably before xmas.
My sister and her husband had a really nice time at Bretton Woods (NH) at xmas.

Whats on your plates?

Lynn

here's what I am thinking

Aug- Chile
Dec- looking into maybe heading to the Ghee' for 2nd week in December then over to the boat for christmas
January- seriously considering catskiing at Wildhorse in BC, possibly over to JH or over to Utah for the Epic gathering.- also EPIC ski clinic at snowmass, may have to crash that one again. It was great to ski with Weems, Barnes and Gieb (although they hate fat skis :))
Feb- the boat for my birthday- and another few days out with Phil in Tahoe
March - not sure, Utah for sure! back to the boat, maybe a quick shot up to Vail or out ot JH. Depends who's holding pow!
April- Vail trip again with bears- great group

all depends on the economy, I took a beating last year. Hopefully, things will continue to improve.

Hi Lynn,

We are hoping to get to Quebec for a week in Dec or Jan -- Le Massif is supposed to be fantastic (tons of snow, apparently), and charming French villages all around.? Mont St. Anne is close, about 30 min., as is Quebec City for a bit of kicking around an old world town.

Then for the kid's March school break we will head to BC and Alberta for a week -- Panorama, Kicking Horse, Lake Louise, Sunshine.....all within a few hours radius.  Such a wealth of choices...should be a blast.?

In between...who knows? A few days at Whiteface, possibly, as it's doable over a long weekend -- about a 6 hour drive.? I will probably have more work trips to Calgary and Vancouver, so will get a few days in here and there at Sunshine / Lake Louise and at Whistler.? If Terryl has time, she may just have to join me -- she skis, I work, we ski together on the weekend....everyone happy!

We ski at our local hill, Blue Mtn., at least once a week.? Often we pick up the kids from school at 2:45, on the hill by 5:00, ski for three hours and home by 9:30.? Great way to break up a busy week.

Cheers,
Svend

Svend/Ron

Each in your own way has quite a nice season ahead!

Ron, a nice spread of trips planned! It's always good when you can work from where ever you are. I need to train to do what you do. What is it you do again??? ??? ;D

Svend, having a local hill for a mid week outing is just fantastic. Your kids will have these memories for a lifetime.
And the chance to ski in western canada. Lucky dog.

Well, now that Jim has a passport, maybe we can coordinate on a trip. I have also heard Le Massif is good.
My son who went to university at McGill, spent a school vacation skiing at Mont St. Anne. Said it was beautfiul, but the coldest temps he has ever experienced.

He said that when standing at the top of the slope, it felt like you could ski right down to the edge of the St. Lawrence river and plunge in. Not true of course, but the perception from far away.

I went skiing with him a couple of times at Tremblant. Interesting set-up with all the lodges at the top. Though the base village is well done with good food to be found.

Aaahhh, living vicariously thru you guys already!

Thanks!  ;D ;D

June:? restarted ski-oriented workouts and balance drills.? More focus on hamstrings and hip adductors this year to improve bump skiing.? Looking down steep inclines whenever I can to learn to relax better on steep hills.? Am always playing with foot inverters or balance walking around the office or standing in line (I don't recommend 1-leg squats in the grocery store checkout line unless you've got superb people skills ... stick to less obvious activities.)

Tonight:? back on Harb Carvers now that the weather is agreeable again

July: buy roadbike ... been procrastinating for a few weeks but I'm out of excuses

October: 1-2 weekend redeye jaunts to Loveland

Nov 6: fitting new boots and on-snow alignment with Chris B. at the skunkworks.

Nov-early Dec:? Killington or Loveland weekends and Thanksgiving holidays as conditions permit

Dec 13-17:? A-basin reunion (Lynn and Jim will be missed)

late Dec-Jan:? Killington, Pico, other points Northeast

Feb-March:? Alternate weekends Killington and A-basin/Loveland + several private lessons at Loveland w/ Diana et al.

early April:? close out Killington

late April:? close out Loveland

early May:? A-basin, look for Phil's sweater on Mothers Day (there were two guys wearing them this year? ??? and you'd never believe who I saw skiing with some of the Epic folks and kidding around with BB :o)

I'm shooting for? 60+ days next season.? Will be trying out the Icon TT 80 and the new SS with the stiffer kers-based tail next season and keeping my im78. (A snowboarder demolished my old SS as I was standing still in a liftline? :o ... clearly a divine messenger sent to tell me to buy more skis? ;D)

Bob is a great guy!  A lot of fun. Have you ever skied with him?  Skiing style aside, he's a wealth of ski-industry knowledge and very funny. Did you ski with Chris Geib? he's another incredibly smooth and powerful skier. Weems, 2 replacement knees and still rips! I enjoyed skiing with that group; weems, Barnes, Geib, Rick (vailskipro) and some others. It doesn't matter about your politics for sking, if you ever get the chance, you should.  They know all the mountains up there like the proverbial back of thier hands.

Ron,

I've watched Bob ski a couple of times when our paths happened to cross, but I've never had the chance to ski with him.? Ditto for Chris and Weems.? I've read enough at Epic to see that they're all great people.? No surprise there, because you don't survive in a service industry for decades as Weems and BB have without being a great people person.? ?My hat's off to Chris for finding a way to move his family from the Midwest to Ski Country -- that shows serious passion for snow!

I have no litmus test for ski partners except that they have fun on snow, and I'd gladly take some runs with any of those folks.?

(My strong views on technique and gear are for my own skiing, and I believe that other skiers are entitled to be just as stubborn-minded as I am about their own skiing.)?

Cool, yeah good people for sure. one caveat, I have to ski with folks who can laugh when they fall and smile when they are skiing. In the end it's just sliding on snow.. Keep up the stoke!

I skied until late into the season this year and plan on doing the same thing this year.? Other than a couple trips planned for some administrative obligations(life is rough eh? ;)), I plan on skiing where ever the mood strikes me.? I may even join a few of you from time to time.

In answer to the question ToddW.....
Me, for one.

I'll buy a beer for the first person who can list the name, model and size of skis I'm on :)

Long term planning isn't my greatest strength, but, some loose thinking includes:

Never been to Tahoe, so, a visit to make turns with Phil is the highest priority sometime in the spring.

For 3 years, I've been in Jackson Hole in January with Gary, Ron and Phil. Love to return, but, Phil is out, Ron is ???? so it may be time for something different. Would consider the Epic Gathering which I believe will be in Utah. Another thought would be to do the 'Boat with Ron and learn how to ski trees.

Would like to do 3 days mid-week in Dec. someplace in Vt. where snow is good.

While my ski thinking will always be aligned with HH, I'd love to meet and ski with Bob Barnes for a day. I really respect his writing and efforts to advance ski technique. Never turn down the chance to ski with a top quality instructor and pick their brain!

Snow Hot's skis: The oval translucent tip's are the give away's for Kastle so Greg's guess is pretty good. The color looks more like my MX-88's so maybe a demo of them in 174.

I think Greg like's O'Dells 5 barrel or steamboat IPA. ;D

so far:
Aug: Chile
Dec: possibly Targhee 2nd week, or to the boat till the day after Christmas.
Jan: hopefully wildhorse powdercats Jan 13-17 and then over to ESA Jan 24-27th.
Feb- somewhere about the 8th back to the boat.  then out to Tahoe
March- hmm? not sure, boat? Utah? got to do Utah this year.  Also possibly Targhee, I loved that place.
April- close out of Vail for sure. That was a great trip.

I was thinking of closing out Alpine meadows instead of Vail this year.

I'm thinking about doing a ski camp at Hintertux in Austria at the beginning of April.? I've never skied in Europe, so if anyone has comments + or - about Hintertux I'd be glad to hear them.
