Back to Revelstoke for a minute....

Hello Jim2 from Maine...I am the Friend from Canada that Jim1 from Kansas mentioned in Post #2.

As I said, I have not skied there but hear a lot about it from skiers that I chat with all around Canada, and read about in our ski media.? Basically, the vibe around Revelstoke is that it is today what Whistler was in its early years.? Revelstoke has only been operating for four years, but is attracting a lot of attention from expert skiers looking for challenging steep terrain, and lots of it.? There is more buzz about this place than any other in Canada at the moment, at least in the expert off-piste skiers community.

It has definitely had some growing pains, and is still in the development stage of its growth.? Cravheater's comments from his visit there where impressions from only their second year open.? Grooming was said to be spotty and poor, they only had a couple of lifts running, trail development was incomplete, and other infrastructure construction was still in progress, and intermediate and beginner terrain was almost non-existent.? But apparently they have come a long way in just two years since then, and things are much more civilized there now, and getting better every year.? It may still have an untamed Wild West feel to it, but that appeals to many.?

It attracts a lot of the young twenty-something fat ski crowd, which I suppose can be off-putting to those of us middle-aged folks (senior-citizen, in Gary's case  ;D) used to more gentrified resorts, but it gives the place a kind of youthful energy.?

OTOH, if you are looking for a skiing challenge, it may be quite an adventure.? They have North America's highest lift-serviced vertical at 5,620 ft, 3,121 acres of fall line skiing, high alpine bowls, 13 areas of gladed terrain and more and more groomed terrain every year (not sure how much, though, but I hear they are developing a lot more intermediate terrain to make it accessible to a wider variety of skiers). They are also apparently the only resort world-wide to offer lift, cat, heli and backcountry skiing from one village base, which gives you access to a total of 515,000 acres of terrain.? And, they have 50 feet of annual snowfall!? As I said, the terrain is steep and gnarly....lots of challenge to be had.? Big boards mandatory.

If that sounds like it could roll your ski socks up and down, then go for it.? I can assert with confidence, that we Canadians are a pretty friendly bunch, and the westerners especially so.? And if you ski in a tutu, we may look at you with a twinkle and a grin, but we won't chuck you off a cliff? :D .? Let us know if you make it there.

BTW, if you want to go up to that general area, but are looking for a more established resort with more variety of terrain for all levels of skiers, then there is no shortage of great places to ski up there.? Within a few hours drive there is Lake Louise, Sunshine (Banff), Norquay, Nakiska, Panorama, Kicking Horse (read the article in the recent Ski Magazine), Fernie, Red, Whitewater, Castle Mountain, and Marmot, and probably a few others I have missed.? A little further west there is Sun Peaks, Big White, Silver Star, Kimberly, and of course, Whistler-Blackcomb.? Lots to choose from.? All top-notch, world class skiing.?

Hope this was helpful.....and let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks G!  When I have a free moment, I will start an equipment thread or two -- one for my new boots, and one for my new skis.  Both purchased with impetus from a highly-placed friend on the board of the One-Man Rochester Economic Stimulus Initiative.... 8)  Come to think of it, he seems to be the only board member.... ;D

Svend, thank you for your thoughts re: Revelstoke. The more I hear, the more I am interested, even if it is a hot place for the twenty-somethings ::). Unfortunately I no longer qualify for the 20 somethings? :'( (although I routinely give my age as 20 because I have run out of fingers and toes and can't count higher? :P).

The group that is going there next winter is the "International Skiing fellowship of Rotarians". Having been a rotarian for just over 20 years, maybe that would qualify me as a 20 something? ::).

If I do head west to Revelstoke, I will be sure to give an update (assuming I remember, I am having more "silver moments"? ???).

Don't worry Jim.  This crowd will keep you on track.  No hope of forgetting anything when you hang around here.  Some here have veeeerrry long memories, particularly for embarrassing personal details.   :-\

We'll be out at Panorama and Banff for a week starting on the 12th, so we'll ask the locals about the latest scoop on Revelstoke....it's only a few hours drive from either place, so the local powder junkies will know the inside info.  I'll post back here in a few weeks and let you know what they report.

Cheers,

Svend

Hey Jim!

Just got back from our trip out west, and had a few chats about Revelstoke with some locals and Australian ski bums who hang around out west for much of the winter.  Seems the consensus is that things are really improving there in way of grooming and lift service.  One guy said the grooming was some of the best he'd seen anywhere, including where were skiing at the time, which was Panorama (and I thought the grooming there was pretty darned good).  If that is true, then it really must be well done.

Couple of folks mentioned that there is not much to do at the resort after the ski day is done, and they wished they'd stayed in town.  Guess that means restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops are minimal.  Not sure what the quality of accommodation is....I didn't ask.

But.....all said it was some of the best skiing they had ever done.  Steep.  Massive terrain.  Lots of variety.  Very challenging -- not for beginners.  Incredibly long runs.....5000 vertical!!! Fantastic scenery.

I asked one guy who was about my age (read:  middle aged) whether he felt there were an over-abundance of resin-crazed twenty-somethings bombing the runs on fat twins and getting air off every little bump, and he said no, that there were not more than any other resort he'd skied at.  He took his young family there, and didn't fear for their safety from getting taken out by one of those yahoos.  Good to hear.....

So, let us all know if you make it there, and what your impressions are.

Cheers, and I hope this was helpful.

Svend

Thanks Svend for the update from people skiing at Revelstoke. The down side of possibly going there, is I will have to pay more attention to some of the powder ski threads, both here and on the PMTS site. Sorry folks, if you haven't figured out already, I am a tipper, not a twister.

Jim#2:

Are you implying that you can't be a tipper in powder?  I've seen the way you rip on the groomers and the bumps, and if I can get around in powder you certainly can.

I certainly hope I am a tipper in powder - if only I could find some powder to find out? ;D.
